Publisher's summary

Author of the beloved Half-Moon Hollow series of vampire romances (Nice Girls Don’t Have Fangs), Molly Harper has created a standalone paranormal romance in which a dilapidated haunted house could bring star-crossed lovers together - if it doesn’t kill them first!

When Nina Linden is hired to landscape a private island off the New England coast, she sees it as her chance to rebuild her failing business after being cheated by her unscrupulous ex. She never expects that her new client, software mogul Deacon Whitney, would see more in her than just a talented gardener. Deacon has paid top dollar to the crews he’s hired to renovate the desolate Whitney estate - he had to, because the bumps, thumps, and unexplained sightings of ghostly figures in 19th-century dress are driving workers away faster than he can say “Boo.”

But Nina shows no signs of being scared away, even as she experiences some unnerving apparitions herself. And as the two of them work closely together to restore the mansion’s faded glory, Deacon realizes that he’s found someone who doesn’t seem to like his fortune more than himself - while Nina may have finally found the one man she can trust with her bruised and battered heart.

But something on the island doesn’t believe in true love…and if Nina and Deacon can’t figure out how to put these angry spirits to rest, their own love doesn’t stand a ghost of a chance.

Good book

I really enjoyed listening to this book despite the heavy on the lovey dovey crap, its light and funny and the mystery isn't so straightforward. I loved all the geeky main male character and references, that was definitely my fave part of the book. I feel like there were some parts of the book that could have been expanded upon a little bit more but over all I loved it and would definitely recommend listening to it.

One of the other reviews complained that she couldn't keep up with who the main characters are and that they weren't given good background introductions and I call bullshit on that and I think she's very stupid because that part of the book of tactfully done to be honest and I think she was just to stupid to actually get it.

Excellent read.

This was a little bit different than Ms. Harper’s usual books. A little bit darker but still holds her trademark humor. While the truth about the ancestors was fairly obvious it was still an excellent scary road taken. I enjoyed it immensely.

Interesting concept, exceptionally poor execution, and one of the worst “main characters” I’ve ever seen

To start with, I like molly Harper works, but this is the farthest thing from a hit for me. The amount of time I had to stop and take breaks with this almost became comical as I’d get frustrated with things the characters did, or other various plot points.

The plot itself is really interesting, and was the only reason I didn’t put the book down, but it’s flawed due to being very sparse as the narrative tries to follow Nina and Cindy in their romantic relationships.

Nina and Deacon are fine as a couple. Despite being the supposed main characters they get very little time together and it makes the steps they take feel forced or unearned. Their dynamic is cute, even if it just boils don’t to “they both like nerd culture”. Cindy and Jake, however, are a whole other issue.

I can’t state how much I dislike Cindy. She actively made me have to put the book down in the way she treats her love interest. I’m sure Molly is trying to make them be the sort of hot and cold sexy dynamic but it fails at every angle. Maybe this is just because I live with someone who grew up being emotionally abused but I couldn’t help but see Cindy as cruel and manipulative. There’s a moment where she outright admits to intentionally starting arguments because she likes to see Jake frustrated. She gives the man a CONCUSSION and never apologizes for it. In fact she never apologizes at all. All because of a minor “slight” that happened EIGHT YEARS AGO. I’m sorry, I just can’t enjoy this, if it was a minor background thing I might have been able to ignore it, but they get more attention throughout the book then the supposed main character. It’s especially frustrating since the book is also trying to tackle the fact that Nina is coming away from and emotionally manipulative work relationship. I just.... it’s baffling and infuriating and I honestly can’t recommend this book at all. Again, part of my dislike for Cindy is that I’ve seen first hand the effects that the sort of things she does and are shown as being “quirky” can do to people in real life. And the fact that the narrative treats her like she’s valid and ok for doing what she does is horrendous. I’m not expecting her to be a villain, but the book really could have really used to have not had her be the way she was. It’s a shame, because I really liked the idea of the ghost story, and it was well executed in parts and there were some nice tense scenes, but the characters, Cindy specifically, made it very difficult to listen to.

Amanda Ronconi does a fantastic job as always, but I would seriously give this book a pass.

"Big Bang Theory cast" vs Scooby Doo

I LOVED this book. It's like the cast of the Big Bang Theory went into a castle to discover the mysteries of a so called family curse.
Nina Linden is a quirky landscaper hired to restore the grounds of a castle on an island off the New England coast, Nina meets Deacon, a self professed nerd and comicon junky and the two hit it off.
The rumors of this 19th century estate are many, but soon the entire team on the island doing the restoration learns some of the rumors are true, like the haunting s.
This fun story really made me giggle, as some antics could be straight out of Scooby Doo.

Looking for a light fun read - this is the book, narrated by Amanda Ranconi who does a terrific job lending her voice to all the characters.

Love Molly Harper and A.R., but...

I love Molly Harper and Amanday Ronconi. The story was gripping and well written, but I had a hard time being able to differentiate between the characters since they did not have varying/thick accents like her book series characters. I found myself rewinding and listening harder for the switch between characters.

cute story!

such a good read. loved most of the characters. My only issues were -the story was barely a mystery, I knew who did what by mid story. And it was almost too perfect. Two couples find love and solve a "mystery" and live happily ever after. This was definitely a ''feel good" book. I think I even sighed at the end. :) I would definitely recommend this book.

My favorite Molly Harper so far

So far I have listened to the Mystic Bayou series and the Naked Werewolf series by Molly Harper. They are a fun guilty pleasure to unwind on my drive home from work. They remind me a bit of the old WB shows like Smallville. Fun, simple entertaining storylines. THIS what’s been my favorite so far. More “meat on the bone” in the story and not as predictable. Looking forward to more.

A Great Deal of Fun

Another Molly Harper winner & Amanda Ronconi master work.
There were spots where the paranormal machinations were a bit of a stretch but, being lost in their world & reading/listening for enjoyment, it was ridiculously easy NOT to care & go with it.
