But Fate has other plans, and it's not long before Min and Cal are dealing with a jealous ex-boyfriend, Krispy Kremes, a determined psychologist, chaos theory, a mutant cat, Chicken Marsala, and more risky propositions than either of them ever dreamed of, including the biggest gamble of all: real love.

"Hurst's voice contains an energy and exuberance that leaves little doubt that she's the perfect narrator for Crusie's heartfelt comedy of errors....[A] zesty, vibrantly told tale." (Publishers Weekly)
I loved how Min (the main female character) was not the perfect size 6 and how the gorgeous male lead appreciated her looks from the beginning.
I have already listened to this book twice and know I will listen to it again!!
Bet Me ranks close to the top. It's entertaining and keeps you going. It is a very chaotic novel with fun and lively characters. I have listened to or read books where it is chaotic, but only because the author doesn't seem to be able to get it together to write a clean, crisp story line. Jennifer Cruisie does this on purpose! This is like a opera singer being able to sing off key when she needs to.
Min who just seems to have a clutsy life and yes, chaos theory at its finest.
The ability to add a hint of sarcasm in her voice when it was appropriate.
I read this as I was keeping tabs on a philosophy class that a colleague was teaching regarding Cultural Theory through the ages. I have to agree with my colleague when she said, "This is a very intelligently written book." "Cruise got skill."
Love a good story and will read just about anything except Sci-Fi, Supernatural/Zombie/Vampire novels. Not snobby--don't enjoy them.
Don's let the description put you off what is actually a cute story. This book was suggested to me by a friend and I read the description and thought I would hate it--guy makes a bet that he can date a girl. But I actually thought it was a fun read. All of the characters were different than you would expect and the story was deeper than the impression you get by reading the description. I really enjoyed it. My only criticism is that I wished it hadn't ended so abruptly--and the tacked on 5 years later epilogue didn't help or satisfy.

What I Loved: Minerva Dobbs is a fantastic lead character. She is funny, snippy, real, and just downright screwed up as the rest of us. I laughed a lot reading this book and I even cried at some points. I probably would have done exactly what she did if I was in the same predicament. At 33, perpetually single, she is a good reputation of most single women in her 30s. Calvin was a fantastic leading man. He was stubborn, charming, screwed up, and gets into plenty of situations that put him into hard situations. Those two together are the most fantastic couple I have read in a long time. I love Liza, Tony, Bonnie,Emilio, and Roger they were fantastic friends to Cal/Min. David/Cynthi were great "villains" and perfect thwarts along the way. The parents will just crack you up and the siblings are a big part of their life too. Everything meshes together really well.
What I Liked: Everything! This truly was a great book:)
Complaints: None :)
Audiobook specific review: The narrator Deanna Hunt did a fantastic job. She did a great job with the book :)
Why I gave it a 5: I liked everything about this book. It was such a fantastic read from beginning to end. You would not go wrong reading this book if you like romance, fun, and great couples!
Who I would recommend this too: Contemporary, Chick-lit, and Romance readers would all love this!
I've been searching for a romance author who can put a clever twist into a story, and I think Stephanie Crusie is perfect. Her humor and phrasing is modern and snappy. The plot line is filled with many surprises along the way. "Bet Me" was great fun to read.
Out of the many Cruise books I give this one the better rating than the others. It is fun, zippy, good narrator and I listened twice in two years. Most Cozy's I can only handle once; but this one is playful enough and the banter back and forth is witty enough to keep me listening intently.
If you are looking for a steamy sexy romances this book is not for you. However if you are in the mood for feel good, hilarious romance with quirky side characters, this book is JUST for you. I bought this on sale and was not expecting much. BOY was I wrong. I had a lot of fun, including laughing out loud on a train. The dialougue and the situation got really silly and funny. I must've looked like a maniac. I have to say because I listened to it, hearing "she said," "he said" repeatedly got tiresome and annoying in somepart.
I also have to point out I looked up the receipe for Chicken Marsala after I read this book. I need to cook it at least once!
I have listened to this book twice and will do so again!
It is great entertainment - the narrator does a swell job and keeps your interest throughout the story.
If you want a book that will help you pass a few hours and leave you with more than a few smiles - give this one a try.
It is my favourite Jennifer Crusie (audio) so far!
I have never liked romances, but this one has changed my mind. This book was so incredibly nuanced, detailed and layered. The main characters are complex, hilarious, and they have stayed with me.
I downloaded this book to listen to during a cross state drive and I loved it and it made my long drive fly by.
The narrator annoyed me for the first few minutes but then I really enjoyed her as she really did a good job of giving each character their own voice.
And let me not forget that the main character is plus size, and she is beautiful the way she is and she is loved the way she is. I wish there were more books like this one!
I am now ready to download another Crusie book!
