Publisher's summary

Min Dobbs knows that happily-ever-after is a fairy tale, especially with a man who asked her to dinner to win a bet. Cal Morrisey knows commitment is impossible, especially with a woman as cranky as Min Dobbs. When they say good-bye at the end of their evening, they cut their losses and agree never to see each other again.

But Fate has other plans, and it's not long before Min and Cal are dealing with a jealous ex-boyfriend, Krispy Kremes, a determined psychologist, chaos theory, a mutant cat, Chicken Marsala, and more risky propositions than either of them ever dreamed of, including the biggest gamble of all: real love.

Critic reviews

"Hurst's voice contains an energy and exuberance that leaves little doubt that she's the perfect narrator for Crusie's heartfelt comedy of errors....[A] zesty, vibrantly told tale." ( Publishers Weekly)

This kind of story makes commuting fun

I've loved Jennifer Crusie's work since I read "Anyone But You" (love ya, Fred!), but this one has made me laugh and cheer out loud during my long commutes. The characters are so easy to like, the story engaging, and the funny moments are truly laugh-out-loud inspiring. Great job, Jenny!

funny read

Enjoyed listening to it very much. It was a very fun read. I like her writing style and that she added the "happily ever after"

Pretty Good!

This is a pretty good book! I liked the characters, they were very relatable. The second half dragged a little, but the characters more than made up for it. Over all it was funny and cute! It was my first of her books, and I am looking forward to the next! I can't wait!

My favorite of Jennifer Crusie's!

Min Dobbs is a great character -average-looking woman who will never be model material, but has a quick wit and funny, caring personality (Like most of us!). Through a series of bets, insults and set downs, she turns prince charming inside out and makes him see how wonderful they both are. Funny, witty, quick moving with lots of twists and turns. I've listened to it over and over.

Loved it!

I loved this! It was light and cute. Yes, predictable, but I liked the characters and the narrator. Kept me smiling! Not rocket science, but I thought it was worth a listen. Hadn't heard of it or the author before - glad I took a chance. Warning: chick book!!! Don't think guys would probably find it as cute as I did. Cute shoes play a part in the plot - nuff said.

one of the best romances ever

i read this book about a year ago and was delighted to find the audiobook on sale here. Lovable characters, plausible romance, cute conversation... i loved the book and enjoyed the audiobook as well. Jennifer Crusie's best so far! Definitely a good bet

Strange attractor

This is a tremendous book. It has layers on layers and is so much fun.

The performance is also great, not very theater-y. But a normal human cadence of speech (rare) that also grasps the humor of the text, which is really important.

(I have seen a few reviews complaining about “he said” and “she said” and I find it bewildering. They didn’t edit them out of the text, but I don’t find it obtrusive in the least. I feel like the complainers have not heard audiobooks where they voice dialog in obviously the wrong voices because they assigned the lines wrong.)

The narrator knows to space out the pronunciation of “Fleet Street” when referring to Sweeney Todd. You’re in good hands is what I’m saying.

Meh

2.5 stars

This book left me annoyed due to its continual focus on the heroine's weight and excessive references to food. While I understand that styles in writing evolve over time, the repetitive emphasis on these aspects became tiresome. The constant mention of the heroine's weight and detailed descriptions of dishes like Chicken Marsala got on my nerves. This book was written 20 years ago.

The gist of the story:
Min (33) and her boyfriend (David) just broke up over her not having sex with him. He bet his friend Cal (who is the golden boy - everything always goes his way) to get her to go out with him.
Cal & his girlfriend (Cynthia) just broke up because she wanted more and Cal wasn’t ready for marriage.
While Min and Cal test out dating each other Cynthia and David spend their time trying to break them up.
