Publisher's summary

Journeying by steampowered sled to London's Frost Fair to perform, Tara and three friends are trapped in a blizzard in the woods. A gruff, handsome stranger offers them shelter - and wants one thing in return. Stories.

The travellers are glad to oblige. Their host, Rolph, is especially captivated by Tara's story of an orphaned girl raised by the Fae in the world of the spirits. Equally intrigued by Rolph, and aware of an electric pull between them, Tara encourages him to share a story of his own. When Rolph weaves a tale of a man who is doomed by his own folly to turn into a wolf at the full moon, Tara suspects there is more than a grain of truth in his words.

When the veil between the mortal and spiritual worlds is parted, and danger threatens, will Tara make the ultimate sacrifice to save Rolph?

Grimm fireside tales on wintry nights

I got this on the strength of the narrator alone and found a captivating novella. It’s got the dark bite of the Brothers Grimm, cautionary dangers of alchemy, dashes of steampunk, and a haunted love story. As an added bonus, there are a few extra fireside tales thrown in. Despite the Edgar Allen Poe feel of pondering on a midnight dreary, the is a cozy level story, profanity free and fading to black.

This isn’t a Beauty and the Beast retelling. If that’s what you’re looking for, I recommend Entreat Me, by Grace Draven. It has a Grimm vibe with fresh twists. Be prepared for a few naughty scenes, though.

Strange mix of Genres

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The mix of different genres was most likely the most interesting aspect of this book. There was steampunk/fantasy with some historical/romance and fairytale. The book though fell flat near the end. For me it just failed to deliver.

What does Rebecca Wisocky bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I picked up this audiobook because of Rebecca Wisocky. I absolutely adore her narrations and would listen to anything she read. She is so good at crafting suspense and her pacing is marvelous.

Very slow tedious beginning, could not finish

I listened all the way to chapter 4 before giving up. A group of performers gets stranded at the home of a stranger when a blizzard takes them by surprise. The stranger takes them in and they proceed to entertain him with stories. Not sure where this book was going but after about the 3rd story being told I'd had enough.

The plot was lost in the beginning and I found myself asking where was it going? I grew bored with the constant story telling and kept waiting for the plot to be revealed. If you are looking for a Beauty and the Beast scenario....this is not it. If you wish to give it a try, be prepared for a VERY slow beginning.
