Publisher's summary

Some things just won’t stay buried… at grave’s end.

It should be the best time of half-vampire Cat Crawfield’s life. With her undead lover, Bones, at her side, she’s successfully protected mortals from the rogue undead. But though Cat’s worn disguise after disguise to keep her true identity a secret from the brazen bloodsuckers, her cover’s finally been blown, placing her in terrible danger.

As if that wasn’t enough, a woman from Bones’ past is determined to bury him once and for all. Caught in the crosshairs of a vengeful vamp, yet determined to help Bones stop a lethal magic from being unleashed, Cat’s about to learn the true meaning of bad blood. And the tricks she’s learned as a special agent won’t help her. She will need to fully embrace her vampire instincts in order to save herself—and Bones—from a fate worse than the grave.

Critic reviews

“Each successive chapter in Frost’s exceptional Night Huntress series adds more complexity, death-defying action, and fiery romance. While expertly deepening Cat and Bones’ love story, Frost also keeps the plot revelations absorbing and the jeopardy remorseless. In an increasingly rich and vibrant genre, she continues to prove she’s a star.” ( Romantic Times)
“A can’t-put-down masterpiece that’s sexy-hot and a thrill-ride on every page. I’m officially addicted to the series.” (Gena Showalter, New York Times best-selling author)

My Public Apology To Tavia Gilbert

Any additional comments?

The book is awesome, if you have read the first 2 (which I highly recommend you do), then you already know it will be an awesome book. But I must say a few words about the narrator first:

*Tap* *Tap* *Tap* Is this thing on? Ok! I would like to take this moment to address a common gripe among those of us who love Jeaniene Frost’s Night Huntress books in the audio format: The voice of Bones. Yes, come on ladies – (and a few men), you know when you first heard Tavia’s portrayal of Bones you thought, “Ew, no, no, no!” The voice is too high for a strong supernatural creature. And the English accent? It sounds like some back-alley sally! Not the sophisticated English accent I expected. Like the majority of you, I couldn’t have agreed more. It was not what I expected, and it took a while to get used to and accept the voice of Bones as Bones. My mind imagined him as a dark, mysterious, take-what-he-wants, protector and seducer, but when I heard the voice all I thought was “He sounds like a snotty adolescent, low class ahole!”

Then I got to “First Drop of Crimson” – a spin off to the Night Huntress Series and COMPLETELY CHANGED MY MIND. After hearing Tavia voice Spade it finally sank in. She gives Spade the voice I wished she had used for Bones. THAT voice is what I wanted to hear. But midway through the book the more I appreciated her portrayal of Spade, the more it made me appreciate her portrayal of Bones. In short, Tavia is a true actress, she sees the inner character – not just what will appease the fans. Spade has that deep and sultry voice, soft and reserved, but firm and constant. He is affluent, he was educated, he grew up knowing social graces and etiquette – he was taught to speak well.

Bones is the exact opposite. He did not grow up around riches and luxury. He probably had no formal education. He was born to a prostitute, the only skill he had was being a prostitute. His human life pretty much consisted of surviving – which means he had to become a good liar, a good manipulator in a “every man for himself” world where being a cocky, punk a-hole probably was his best defense. – Love, real love, is a completely new concept to Bones. Everything before Cat has been a performance or a mutual understanding. The voice she uses for Bones is absolutely PERFECT and I would like to publically apologize to Tavia Gilbert for thinking I know how to do her job better than she does.

Tavia sweetheart, I apologize. You are an awesome actress and I bow to your skills. Don’t let anyone tell you how to do your job. Ever.

Sucks you in. (Pun intended)

I've read a lot of fantasy / paranormal romance books and must admit I've found a lot of them to be too formulaic, too predictable or to be full of "stormy emotions" that don't grip the reader at all.
The Night Huntress series, on the other hand, does EVERYTHING right.
The story is fast paced, original, fun and sexy. The chemistry between Cat and Bones is sizzling. The side characters all have their own personalities - which add a lot of spice to the story. Despite the fantasy backdrop, it's hard not to get emotionally involved in the story. The book had me both in tears and grinning from ear to ear.

It's hard to compare the books to anything else, but imagine Trinity from the Matrix movies, put into a True Blood-ish setting. Add Spike from Buffy as the male lead and make Quentin Tarantino the director - and you might get an idea what kind of ride you're in for.

This is book 3 not book 4

I am so happy to hear the audio version of this story!! I can never seem to read with a British voice in my head and it was great to hear Bones again.

A war! Make for a exciting twist to the heart

This third installment is all about vampire war. We get to know much more about Bones in this book. We also a delivered a complex plot. One of the best things about this novel is, Cat make some decisions about herself and we start to see her character change in subtle, yet very interesting complex ways. This has interesting impacts for future installments.

At this point I am used to Gilbert's narration of Bones -- still not a favorite, but... You can read this as a stand-along and then go back and read the first two. When thinking about this book, the for two books give a much sub-story. If you really must read this one first go ahead, otherwise I suggest starting from the beginning.

I give this book a thumbs up. It's a riveting listen.

Good, but not great

Book #2 is my favorite of this series so far....this book was good, just missed some of the chemistry between Cat and Bones that I am used to seeing in the other books. Looking forward to reading book 4 and hoping that will be back. I love this series and anxiously await the next books!
