Publisher's summary

Nothing incites Marcus more than the primal hunger roused by his former fiancée, Elizabeth. It’s been years since she jilted him for another man, but that only means there’s a lot to catch up on, a lot to make up for, and that he’s going to enjoy every sweet moment.… The same drive and passion that sent her into another man’s arms is what brings Elizabeth back to Marcus. Her attraction to him is the one thing she fears, but she’s run out of options. Resisting is impossible. But does she have the courage to surrender everything?

It Needed the Ending

First of all, I am not in love with Justine Eyre as a narrator. She makes all the male characters sound like sleepy lizards.

That said, the story is interesting because of the bit of mystery carrying it. The romance is a little weird, bordering on sadomasochism and a bit of stalking.

The ending saves the book.

A HERO WHO NEVER GAVE UP ON LOVE, nor the heroine.

This was a nice georgian romance with a narrator that enhanced the story. I enjoyed Justine Eyrre's performance. Her female voices were feminine and clear, and the male voices were perfectly masculine and razor sharp.

This book got better as the story progressed. It's an interesting concept where the female and male leads somewhat switch traditional roles. Elizabeth was engaged to Marcus Ashford and broke her engagement to him after catching him in a suspicious situation. Yet, it was so hard to conceive how Elizabeth was able to get herself hitched to another man the very night she broke off her engagement to Marcus. What the????? Many questions came up right away for me. Why didn't Elizabeth give Marcus the time he needed to explain his predicament? How did she arrange to marry another so quickly? Well, these questions are pursued and explored by Marcus throughout this book as he returns to London in a poignant time in Elizabeth's life when she is both in danger and a widow. Marcus steps in to help solve the mystery surrounding her husband's murder as well as to protect Elizabeth as her fate is connected to the existence of a journal by her late husband. And so this love affair continues after being suspended for 4 years (from the time Elizabeth broke off the engagement to the present).

I really liked how both leads went through huge transformations throughout this book. In the first half of the book, Elizabeth is almost intolerable. She came across as a Type A personality and control freak to me. She also seemed hollow. In contrast, Marcus was a dream! Bless his heart, I felt so much sympathy for him because he fell in love with a very hard woman to love. When Marcus first saw Elizabeth at a debutante ball, he fell hard for her. She made an indelible impression that almost bordered on obsession for him. Marcus has not been well since Elizabeth jilted him. I loved to see how Marcus' relentless persistence turned this relationship into an incredible, insatiable love affair. He really did save Elizabeth, as a person. She didn't even realize how miserable she was until she opened up her heart to him. Lastly, the ending was very satisfying as well.

3/4 of a Great Book

I really did enjoy this book overall. It was well written and the characters fleshed out well. It was incredibly sexy and the plot was interesting with several twists and turns that I honestly did not see coming. Marcus was a great dominant character and Elizabeth was no pushover herself. My only minor quibble was that it was overly and somewhat unnecessarily dramatic in some places relationship wise. It's a personal pet peeve of mine when romance novels create friction between the main characters by having one character unnecessarily withhold information from the other. Just talk to each other for goodness sake.

Glad I finished!

I like to read along while listening to the audio performance and most the time it is thoroughly enjoyable. This time however I was forced to abandon the audio and finish the book without it. I loved the story... a fast paced historical romance filled with daring do and erotic passion. The audio performance unfortunately was not. Ignoring the pace and nearly all of the emotion contained in the book the narrator read everything in a slow paced ... long... breathy...whisper... By the time I quit listening I was nearly bored out of my mind and considered not finishing at all.

For those who have been advised by their doctors to avoid all excitement... you may listen to this without fear. For everyone else; I recommend reading the book yourself or listening as your partner reads it to you. I guarantee you won't be bored!

Enjoyable characters

The story was well written and the narrator did a good job. I’m looking forward to the next book on the series.

FIVE STARS - THREE WORDS PERFECT DELICIOUS HOT

This is book 1 of SD's Regency series and I only hope Audible will continue to give us more from this brilliant and very talented author as this had everything a historical romance lover looks for in a listen.

A passion filled, well described and interesting storyline with a few plot twists, strong and likeable characters, a handsome tormented dominant Rake (don't we just love 'em) and the love scenes are both sensual and sweet. All this performed by the gifted Justine Eyre who breathes life into the characters and makes it a very pleasureable listen.

For the 'got to get it historically correct' listeners I am sure that in the Regency era there weren't such four letter words used as is in this book (which wasn't even an issue for me) but with a shrug and a "hey so what" surely overlooking them should be easy and ..... this was SD's first ever Manuscript !!

Worth a credit? Absolutely YES but at $9.79 (can't believe the price) I just bought it and saved my credit for a more expensive but probably not more deserving or enjoyable book - but be warned - if you don't like a 'hot and heavy' listen then look elsewhere.

Oh My!

sexy hot hot hot. It has great sex, it has relate-able women's logic, and there is the spice of adventure. It was a great escape for me. The perfect thing to listen to in the tub. It was the perfect flow there was no teasing for the one generic hot moment there was the right amount of teasing and lots of good sex. The best part was it was not a penthouse smut there is depth to the characters.
