Publisher's summary

Eleven thousand years ago a god was born. Cursed into the body of a human, Acheron spent a lifetime of shame. His human death unleashed an unspeakable horror that almost destroyed the earth. Brought back against his will, he became the sole defender of mankind.

Only it was never that simple. For centuries, he has fought for our survival and hidden a past he never wants revealed - until a lone woman who refuses to be intimidated by him threatens his very existence.

Now his survival, and ours, hinges on hers, and old enemies reawaken and unite to kill them both. War has never been more deadly...or more fun.

Love in vein: listen to another Dark-Hunter novel.

Repetitive S&M and Soft-core God Porn

I have lost a bit of my sanity in the last 8+ hours and don't think I can continue. I think it's the first time I've ever dropped a story. I cannot understand how an established author (what's her name) can possibly get by with writing essentially 20 pages of content, with another 400 pages of repetitive dribble-drabble, of which can be summarized in the following ways:

1) Acheron was born - and is cursed, of which we're reminded constantly.

2) Acheron is sexually abused, beaten, and humiliated, of which we're intimately privy to every 20 minutes.

3) Acheron begins to trust sister, Risa. Sister is INCREDIBLY NAIVE AND STUPID (and I really cannot emphasize this enough), yet Acheron keeps falling for her good-intentioned help. And right after he does so, Acheron is beaten severely and pleas for death. Sister is of course indignant.

4) Repeat #3 about 30 times to the utter delight of all listeners.

5) Acheron begins trusting the Goddess Artemis. Artemis is incredibly childish and temperamental for a Goddess, and yet Acheron KEEPS trusting and falling in love with her. And of course, b/c of this, Acheron is beaten severely and pleas for death.

6) Repeat #5 about 10 times.

7) Acheron calls legitimate father "father", and legitimate brother "brother" and gets beaten severely for it roughly 40 times throughout the past 8 hours.

8) Repeat all of these steps a few more times, intertwined with a good bit of heterosexual and homosexual scenes, and you've got a great 8+ hours ahead of you.

The point I got during this time: Acheron suffered a great deal. But now, I've suffered even more.

Missing chapters

I love this book. I've read it several times. I love this narrator. The problem is that the recording is missing about 100 pages. The pages where Acheron meets Tori. THAT IS AN IMPORTANT MEETING! I called Audible and they basically said it wasn't a big deal. I paid for this, I want to hear the whole book.

Yumm!

I love Kenyon's work. Always have and always will. In the past I have been more than a little disappointed by the clumsy, almost criminally bad narration used for some of her earlier titles. Now in walks Holter Graham and my long standing fancy for the dark, brooding and sexy Ash (Acheron) becomes a full blown crush! I absolutely adore this narrator and really loved the story. NEWBIES BEWARE- there are very strong tones of violence and sadistic childhood abuse in this and some other Kenyon titles. In Acheron's case it's fair to call this extreme and totally heart wrenching. There is also a healthy does of explicit sex. That said, all of the aforementioned ADULT content serves the plot impeccably and builds solid gold characters the reader can easily invest in. I literally wanted to throw my arms around some of these characters. Others I could get medieval on to stop their sadistic tendencies.
All in all- I loved the story and from now on will have a special place in my heart for a certain Nickleback song (wink wink).

couldn't stop listening

This was my first book by the author. I am glad I was taken in by all of the hype. Even though the beginning of the book is tough to get through because of the hardship Ash goes through, it allows the reader to sympathize with Ash and love him more. Great narration!

One of the best in the series

This is by far, the best book in the series. So many questions answered and the characters really come to life. I enjoyed it a great deal.

Satisfying, but with a few flaws.

Acheron gets his HEA, and basically that is what all of us DarkHunter fans have been wanting for a long time. Unfortunately, Kenyon takes more than half of the book and devotes it to excruciating details of Ash's past. And, oh do I mean excruciating. If you don't like pain, don't read or listen to this book. It was hard to take sometimes, but it does explain what and why Acheron is. As for the narration, Holter did wonderfully, but I was thrown off by him pronouncing Ash's name as Asheron instead of Akeron as he did in Devil May Cry. Also, the Gallu demon who was the bad guy in DMC didn't have an accent in Acheron. The only thing I truly didn't like was that so many characters were repeatedly and unneccesarily stupid and/or cruel. It was kind of like Kenyon didn't think we'd get it, so she decided to bludgeon us over the head repeatedly that Ash had a horrible life.

Awesome

This book was awesome and explained things from previous books. The reader, Holter Graham, was wonderful and I hope he is the reader for other Sherrilyn Kenyon books as wells as Christine Feehan.

This was good but seemed to lack. something?

What to say about Acheron. The first 2/3 of the book is very difficult to listen to or read. It's brutal and cruel, but it does explain Ash's life, but I think it was just a little bit TOO long. Like another reviewer wrote, we got that he was treated like crap with the first few hundred pages, still, it was over 400 pages of brutality and hate. She broached a lot of taboo subjects and for that I have to give her props.

Rape, incest, brutality and sexual violence were deeply ingrained in most of this book and some people are very sensitive to that kind of thing.

For years my friend and I have been trying to figure out who Ash's HEA would be and it turns out I was right.

As for their interaction, she seemed to deal with him and everything that he is/was with a grain of salt and it was almost too easy in that regard. Maybe it was because of his past, that he needed someone, just once, to say ok, I'll take you as you are.

Ash wanted/needed love. To be loved and to know love. He gets that with this book, but I can't help but wonder how this will change him in the future of the series.

I also wonder about his brother and what happens with him at the end of the book. Somethings were done to death and others seemed to be glossed over quickly where I think they should have been explored and explained more for a more in depth view of it all.

It was nice to see some old faces also, but again, not much was new or settled there. They were just kinda there to say that they were.

Things with Nick are still bitter and raw and Artie, man, she's a piece of work. I can't wait until she gets hers.

It is at times hard to imagine that Ash, the leader of the DH let people treat him like he had for thousands of years. sometimes I wonder simply. WHY didn't he just LEAVE? Get on a ship and go somewhere else? Walk out of his fathers house when he was old enough? Why sit there, where everyone hates you. He could have saved himself a lot of pain.

Phew...That was some book!!!!!!

Incredible!! Outstanding!! I was emotionally exhausted at the end of the book. Sherrilyn Kenyon outdid herself with this one. Although the brutality with Acheron was...maybe...too much information at times...you had to feel the pain THOROUGHLY to understand what he was about. I was overwhelmed with emotion at the end. EXCELLENT EXCELLENT book!!!!!
