"Christian Fiction That Doesn't Back Down"

Although I've been a Christian for most of my life, I'm almost always disappointed by Christian fiction due to it's lack of honesty. Rarely does a book shine the light of Jesus so clearly, while not denying the truth of what living in the world is really like. This story is full of wonderful characters dealing with the real issues of life in ancient Rome. We are shown the open debauchery, decadence, and brutal violence of the time very vividly by Francine Rivers, who gives us a "meaty" story that will satisfy both Christians and non-Christians alike.

The narration is weak, and if you're picky about that in an audio book, I suggest you listen to the sample for a long time before you decide to buy this book. The cast of characters is very large, and the narrator does not use much variety with his voices or accents, especially with the females. All his women have a weak, whiny quality to their voices. It took me a couple of chapters to stop being distracted by him, but eventually, the strength of the story itself was enough for me to really begin to enjoy the book.

    "Wonderful book..."

This book depicts the Roman era and it showed how depraved the people were without Christ in their lives. There is hope and Haddassah's character shows how we should serve one another with a servant's heart. This book does not hide the violence at all. Francine Rivers is so detailed in her writing, that I could smell the foul air, where the slaves were held in the ships. I could feel their desperation. I could feel the eternal hope in Haddassah. It was a long book, but I didn't want it to end. Be sure to read all three books in the series. I believe my husband would enjoy this book too, it isn't all about romance.
I only gave it 4 stars, because I would have liked another narrator, possibly two narrators. One for the males and one for Haddassah. He wasn't terrible though and it didn't keep me from listening.

I'm a 24-year-old woman who loves to read. The longer the book, the better. The Stand, The Help and The Hunger Games are my favorites.

    "excellent story"

This has to be my favorite Francine Rivers book so far. It has lots of different elements in it which can appeal to different people. It has romance, suspense, action, and much more. The narator is quite good too. I've read other books that he has narated, and I didn't like them too much. I loved this one. The book starts out a little slowly at first, but that is because all of the characters have to be introduced and that takes a while. I recommend this one whole-heartedly. It's awesome!

    "Phenomenal story!!"

Great story!! I would highly recommend this to anybody who likes a love story, a action story, suspense and inspiration. Three stories that intertwine and come together at the end. The narrarator was very good, also.

    "An truly blessed author"

Nevermind that the story itself was unbelievably rich and entertaining and satisfying. Nevermind that the narrator has the deep voice that IS like a "voice in the wind". Ms. Rivers is certainly touched with the grace and love that she writes for her characters. In one work of fiction, she compellingly conveys the grace and love of the God she writes about.

    "Outstanding"

I had been given a book by Francine Rivers Years ago (I can't remember which one) and I began reading it, but became distracted and put it down. Honestly, I was skeptical that a "Christian" book would be interesting and engrossing so I didn't really give it a chance. I read most of the Left Behind series and assumed that most Christian novels would be as poorly written. Fast forward to the present and I decided to try again. This is easily one of the best books I have ever read. It was engrossing, heart-wrenching, and well written. The characters came alive and I really cared about them. I can't wait to read the other books in this series as well as other books by this author.

    "Captivating..."

I believe this is the best book that I've listened so far from audible. It has substance and well-written, the story would take you right to where all the characters and the settings are and you don't want to leave. Very impressive writing.

    "The characters held my attention"

Non-christian and apostate readers will find a very transparent message aimed right at them in this novel set in 1st-century Rome. Be suspicious if your Mom asked you to read this book. That being said, I am surprised at how much I enjoyed listening to this story. I fell in love with the characters and I am inspired to lead a better christian life. I'll certainly read more of what Francine Rivers has written based on my positive experience with this one.
