Publisher's summary

Stephanie Laurens authors USA Today best-selling historical romance novels, such as Devil's Bride. Exciting and deeply sensuous, A Rake's Vow continues the Bar Cynster series.

Unlike his brothers, Vane Cynster vows to never marry. The eligible women of London have different plans for him, however. Seeking safety at Bellamy Hall, the residence of his eccentric godmother, Vane doesn't expect to meet any new unmarried women. But upon his arrival, he encounters the voluptuous Patience Debbington in the garden.

When their gazes meet for the first time, she is filled with a sensation that leaves her quivering. Thoroughly overwhelmed, Vane realizes that he has never met a woman quite like Patience Debbington. As Vane's seductions prove more and more irresistible, Patience's oath to never open herself to heartache may soon be broken.

Simon Prebble narrates this tale with the intuitive boldness and sensitivity of a true master.

Savor another Cynster novel.

Critic reviews

"Stephanie Laurens brings a thorough command of Regency style, as well as graphic, uninhibited love scenes....Laurens is especially skillful at capturing Regency males, aristocrats whose refined restraint barely masks their powerful underlying urges." (Amazon.com review)

Brace yourself.

This story is overwhelmed by the sexual encounters, most of them could be considered rape. the method of wooing was stalking.

Not as good as the first book

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

I was a bit disapointed because I loved the first book Devil

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

I don

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Now the narator was good

Do you think A Rake's Vow needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

NO !!! but I will continue to read about the Cynster

Any additional comments?

I wished I had saved my money on this book ( again I loved Devils Bride )

ANOTHER OF THE AMAZING BAR

Where does A Rake's Vow rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

A Rake's Vow is another of Stephanie Laurens amazing Cynster novels. The storyline was not my favorite of the four I have listened to, but who can resist a Cynster.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Patience and Vane. Patience was strong and willful, I like seeing that in a romance novel; no mamby-pamby females for me.

Which character – as performed by Simon Prebble – was your favorite?

Vane. Simon Prebble is the only one who can do the Bar Cynster voices as far as I am concerned. The deep rumble, the stern, forceful tenor, both very sexy. I think he does the other voice really great also. Being a diehard Dick Hill fan, it is difficult to listen to women perform male voices although there are some who do a fairly good job, however, it is wonderful to know that there is another very strong, sexy male voice to perform romance novels. I will always listen to Simon Prebble.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The relationship between Vane and Patience kept me anxious and aroused (during their lovemaking) and there were a few places I laughed.

Any additional comments?

WOW !! I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a good, strong romance with intrigue and suspense.

Good but really dragged on

The premise of the book was good, but it just dragged on and on and on with kind of a lot of drabble. Its probably sounding a lot worse than it is. I did enjoy it. Mostly. But I was really glad when it was over. There was a lot of sex. Probably really good descriptive sex, but dare I say there was so much that it got boring. But also, I kind of struggle with male narrators reading sex scenes. I hear sex from a female perspective, so to hear a male, trying to sound like a female... just doesn’t really do it for me. Other than that, Simon Prebble does a good job. I’ll probably read another in the series, but not in a rush to do so. Maybe if they're on a 2 for 1 sale.

Happy sigh....

Caveat: I consider the Cynster series to be the best historical romance series I’ve found in over 40 years of obsessive reading.
How lovely to enjoy the story of the next Cynster to fall - in love. This time it’s cousin Vane who drives away from Devil and Honoria’s wedded bliss only to have a storm send him into the arms of his destiny. When Vane races out of a storm to find shelter at his godmother’s house, he knows immediately when Patience Debbington falls into his arms that his life is changed forever.
Fate holds him there when Vane knows he has to stay and resolve the strange goings on at Minnie’s house.
When their intimacy grows, Vane is further challenged by Patience’s refusal to marry.
Prebble is outstanding as narrator.

Reduce repetitive sex content

Too many sex sense with the same content. Shorten book by deleting some of that content.

Storyline had potential but a bit thin.

Characters were interesting but the story line was pretty thin. The mystery aspect was nice but much really happens.

Skip this one in the Cynster series

Weak plots. Lots of long, boring, kissing scenes. Slow moving. Half the length would have been better. Never explored why vain and Patience loved each other , besides they “looked good/beautiful.” Both unusually stubborn, not really likable.
