A Night Like This | [Julia Quinn]

A Night Like This

Anne Wynter might not be who she says she is.... But she's managing quite well as a governess to three highborn young ladies. Her job can be a challenge: in a single week she finds herself hiding in a closet full of tubas, playing an evil queen in a play that might be a tragedy (or might be a comedy; no one is sure), and tending to the wounds of the oh-so-dashing Earl of Winstead. After years of dodging unwanted advances, he's the first man who has truly tempted her, and it's getting harder and harder to resist.

Her job can be a challenge: in a single week she finds herself hiding in a closet full of tubas, playing an evil queen in a play that might be a tragedy (or might be a comedy; no one is sure), and tending to the wounds of the oh-so-dashing Earl of Winstead. After years of dodging unwanted advances, he's the first man who has truly tempted her, and it's getting harder and harder to remind herself that a governess has no business flirting with a nobleman.

Daniel Smythe-Smith might be in mortal danger....

But that's not going to stop the young earl from falling in love. And when he spies a mysterious woman at his family's annual musicale, he vows to pursue her, even if that means spending his days with a 10-year-old who thinks she's a unicorn. But Daniel has an enemy, one who has vowed to see him dead. And when Anne is thrown into peril, he will stop at nothing to ensure their happy ending....

"Maybe Julia Quinn is not for me"

Again the magic eludes me, I wanted to love this book, I really did, and for the life of me I don't get why her books don't move me, they just don't inspire any passion in me like Lisa Kleypas' novels do.
But I guess if you are a die hard fan of Julia Quinn you will find it enjoyable, for me this novel was just a little better than meh! And it's not the writing or the likeability of the characters, I just don't know what it is.
Rosalyn Landor's performance is as flawless and as terrific as always.

"Great story, well done and read"

I've only read one other Julia Quinn before this. I really enjoyed the book and in some places laughed outloud. The heroine and indeed all the women are portrayed as strong which is not always the case in period novels. The narration is excellent. I'm going back for more Julia Quinn.

    "just ok"

I love Julia Quinn and look forward to her books but this one is just okay. I found it frustrating in places and was looking forward to the end which is something I rarely do. A couple of times I even checked to see how much time was left before it ended. One dud amoungst her many other marvelous books is acceptable. I'ts not a bad or boring book entirely just not up to her usual standards.
The narrator Rosalyn Landor is faultless as always.

    "My first Julia Quinn"

My younger sister, who won't read anything that has "horseless carriages", recommended this author. I, who used to never read any romance of a historical nature, being a non-fiction snob in that area, decided to give her a try. At my older sister's insistance I have read and/or listened to Amanda Quick, Lisa Kleypas, Eloisa James, Jennifer Ashley and others. My favorite sort of book has to have at least some things to make me laugh, and A Night Like This met that desire The story was excellent, with the mysterious past of the female protagonist, and the inappropriate attraction between her, as the governess, and the Earl who is the uncle of her charges. It highlights the nebulous position a governess has in a household, and how this contributes to the conflict. The dialog between the characters, including secondary one, is where you get the giggles. There are tears as well and some excitement. The narration is excellent, which is always a huge plus for me (some narrators can get on my nerves). Give this one a listen and see if you don't agree with me! :)

    "Not what I'd hoped for"

I have loved Julia Quinn's books forever. I have grown to expect enjoyable characters presented with humor. Fun books to read. This one was more your average historical romance with less of the humor I love from Julia Quinn. I enjoyed the children in this book, but more could have happened with them - she doesn't milk the unicorn girl for all she's worth. I still enjoyed the novel, it just wasn't fabulous, and usually Quinn is close to fabulous.

    Story
    "delicious and enjoyable"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I enjoyed this book and recommend it if you’re in the mood for an entertaining romance with a sprinkling of light erotica. The heroine is smart, witty, not too silly. Surprisingly the hero is equally appealing, with a good sense of humor. Their personalities seem slightly 21st century to me, but after all this isn’t historical fiction.

What did you like best about this story?

The couple, Ann and Daniel, develop an infatuation that deepens into a strong mutual understanding and appreciation. The secondary characters are well-developed and believable. Don’t expect deep philosophy or characters that cope with historical events during this time period (early to mid 1800?). The story is deftly balanced between the love plot and the action in the characters’ lives.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

This book didn’t change my life, but the characters did stick with me after I finished reading the story.

    "Story weak"
Would you try another book from Julia Quinn and/or Rosalyn Landor?

    Yes

What was most disappointing about Julia Quinn’s story?

    Story line weak.

What would have made this romance irresistible?

Less filler It really didn't need to act out Harriet's play

    Any additional comments?

Still haven't finished the book, I've been taking it in short bursts. Not really moving along smoothly.

    "Sweet Read"
Who was your favorite character and why?

I loved the hero and heroine in this book, the entire series is great. This book kind of over-lapped the last book in the series, like they took part at the same time so now you get to see the other side.

Which character – as performed by Rosalyn Landor – was your favorite?

Rosalyn Landor is fantatstic, all the characters sounded great.

    Any additional comments?

This story is fun, witty, and hard to put down.

    "Much Dialogue, Little Plot"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

If you like Julia Quinn and her witty wriitng, you'll like this one.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Anne, the heroine, is a truly likable lady, if a bit sad.

Which character – as performed by Rosalyn Landor – was your favorite?

I like all her charcacter voices. She is a good performer of Julia Quinn's style.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

No extreme reacton, and that is what is preventing me from giving this five stars.I would like to have been totally involved, but this was a book about conversations and not well-rounded plot and characters.

I agree with the other review, this was an easy read and I found it quite entertaining. I had to chuckle, imagining the precocious 10-year-old battling with a contra bassoon however. She would have needed large hands at the very least...

    "I'm rather disappointed."

It's an ease read, but reminds me too much of the previous books of this author. Julia Queen didn't surprise me at all. It wasn't even that funny, unlike her previous books.
