Publisher's summary

Olivia Kiskey needs a change. She’s been working at the same Nodaway Falls, New York, waffle house since she was a teenager; not a lot of upward mobility there. She’s been in love with Tobias, the cook, for the last four years; he's never made a move. Every Saturday night, she gathers with her three best friends—Peach, Millie, and Stacy—and drinks the same margaritas while listening to the same old stories. Intent on shaking things up, she puts her house on the market, buys a one-way ticket to Europe, and announces her plans to her friends... but then she meets Davina Granville, a strange and mystical Southern woman who shows Olivia that there is more to her life than she ever dreamed.

As Liv’s latent magical powers come to the surface, she discovers that having an interesting life is maybe not all it’s cracked up to be. The dark side of someone else’s magic is taking over good people in town, and changing them into vessels of malevolence. Unwilling to cede her home to darkness, she battles the demons of her familial past and her magical present, with those she loves at her side - and in the cross fire. Can the most important things in life—friendship, love, magic, and waffles—get her through the worst that the universe can throw at her?

Not a complete waste of time, just so so.

From the title the book was basically what I expected, but the author made the heroine almost too stupid to live and that is why it earned such a low rating. The story gave an interesting concept of magic, and Amanda's performance kept me going were otherwise I might have put down the book and not picked it up again. The action was fairly well paced, but all in all I am not eager to read the next book in the series.

The bad guy was easy to spot

This book was ok, not wonderful. She was blind to who the real bad guy was in this book. It was not hard to tell yet she allowed herself to conned. I wanted to like her friends but they were annoying and self centered . The magic thing was weirdly handled.

A cute distraction

It was OK. one day, I'd like to read a supernatural romance novel in which the women aren't such overreacting stereotypes. It's annoying. Really annoying. That aside, this is a cute, if predictable, story. A good beach read.

Frustrating Book

I listened to this book because I LOVE Amanda Ronconi and how she narrates. This book however, was completely frustrating. The main character is wishy-washy and seriously selfish. She's really awful and heinous to her friends at times. Then will turn around and expect THEM to apologize?!? What the heck? I really, really, really wanted to love this book. The concept is fun. and the story was new and nothing I'd read or listened to before. I adore her abilities, and would like my own Gibson and Niles. But the character...I can't get past her self centeredness and her complete inability to think that maybe, just maybe, trusting a stranger when one of your oldest friends says NOT to trust them, isn't a great idea. Ugh. She's just one of those annoying characters that thinks they're never in the wrong and it's everyone else's fault.

Neat story with a stupid heroine

I think the worst part for me was the stupid actions of the main character. Her idiotic compassion for a killer witch, even when said witch is holding a rock over her head ready to smash her scull, was SO unrealistic. I was rolling my eyes the entire last chapters. No one is that naive or just plain stupid enough to care about the well being of their attacker. 🙄
