“Alexander does a lovely job of representing the historical details … without letting the facts distract from a tenderly told love story.” (Publishers Weekly)
Don't get me wrong - the voice actor has a very pleasant voice. I just didn't enjoy listening to her read from the perspective of a 19-year-old young woman character and very little differentiation between any of the other characters. The book just seems wrong on so many levels. I don't think audible made it clear that it was an inspirational romance first off (my mistake) and there were situations that seem highly unlikely in mid-19th-century among the wealthy and affluent. Sutton spending many hours in the late day in Claire's bedroom keeping her awake after a head injury, for one. More than a big issue for me was the portrayal about the mental faculties of a 48-year-old man. They talk about him like he was 108. I found the book to be fussy and so slow, even though I was interested in the story and finding out how it ended. I still have 3 hours to go and I don't think I can stand it anymore. I buy books that I can read or listen to again and again and I won't be listening to this one again. This book is more than painful. Historical detail aside - Save your credit.
More than an hour and a half to go and the author just portrayed a woman that can't be 50 with serious dementia. This seems to be a continuous theme throughout.
After re-reading reviews from others, I feel certain that these people didn't actually read the book but skimmed through it.
worth a listen once. i really like the narrator from gone with the wind that's why i grabbed this one. story is ok but very predictable and then ends abruptly with no real feeling of resolution because there was never any tension because you know how it's going to end...
Beautifully written, unique and easy listening story with historical basis. A really fun listen enhanced by a great narrator.
I loved reading this book. it kept me riveted to find out how it would turn out to the very end. The relationships and situations were very real to life and I loved how the Author wove her dedication to God in the pages of this very worth while book.
The narrator is extremely "nagging" I am returning the book at the start of Chapter 5.When I saw the book is 17h long.. my decision was made
The book appeared to me being an artist myself. I am sure it would have been a nice book to read.
Overall performance. It seemed she stopped after every word. I am sorry to say but she sounded tired and I am driving in my car all the time listerning to audio books and I wanted to fall asleep from the beginning. I will return the book immediately
I enjoyed it. Nice story line.
I liked that it was about a real place and a real person.
There was a little bit of everything to enjoy in this book: romance, mysteries, history, murder. I loved the story, although there was too much sensual writing for my taste. I didn't find it necessary to stir the romance, and thought it detracted from the value of the story. Still, it was worth it to me because the other parts of the storyline were very good. The narrator was talented in her voices. Although her cadence distracted me a bit. I would listen to it again, though. In fact, I might!
