Publisher's summary

Miss Kate Daltry doesn't believe in fairy tales...or happily ever after.

Forced by her stepmother to attend a ball, Kate meets a prince...and decides he's anything but charming. A clash of wits and wills ensues, but they both know their irresistible attraction will lead nowhere. For Gabriel is promised to another woman—a princess whose hand in marriage will fulfill his ruthless ambitions.

Gabriel likes his fiancee, which is a welcome turn of events, but he doesn't love her. Obviously, he should be wooing his bride-to-be, not the witty, impoverished beauty who refuses to fawn over him.

Godmothers and glass slippers notwithstanding, this is one fairy tale in which destiny conspires to destroy any chance that Kate and Gabriel might have a happily ever after.

Unless a prince throws away everything that makes him noble....

Unless a dowry of an unruly heart trumps a fortune....

Unless one kiss at the stroke of midnight changes everything.

bad prince

I really enjoy most of James's novels. this prince turns out to be okay, but for most of the book he is an a**. I really wanted Kate to run off with his half brother.

A fairy story indeed!

Firstly, to comment on the narrator; I normally find myself struggling to ignore the narration, but this reader is better than most I've listened to with one criticism. I didn't care for Gabriel's accent. I don't know if it is an accurate one for Warl-Marburg-Baalsfeld but I found it distracting and would have prefered more feelings than accent. but maybe that's just me.
As far as the story, it is a nice light take on the traditional cinderella fairy tale, with characters one can grow to like. the hero is a bit on the self centered side and the heroine not so perfect herself, but you can see the characters develop sutlely and they have nice dimension. I must admit, I liked some of the secondary characters as much as the main characters, particularly Wick and Harry and especially the "rats". I didn't quite understand the pickle eating dog referances, but those minor details aside, I enjoyed this audio book over all.

Fun read!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

This was my first Eloisa James book and I found it to be a lot of fun. I would definitely recommend it!

What other book might you compare A Kiss at Midnight to and why?

Eloisa James books remind me of all the things I love about Susan Elizabeth Phillips books: witt, romance, a little heart break and interesting characters.

What about Susan Duerden’s performance did you like?

All of the characters had distinct, pleasing voices.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes!

Lovely....

A Kiss at Midnight....Loved this story so much! It was a really good book and loved the narrator. I've been hesitant to listen to her because in a few of her prior story narrations she's been breathy, but not in this story. The descriptions and overall story was a 5 star for me.

The most enjoyable book I've read in awhile

I loved Kate, she is a refreshing , strong and beautiful heroine. I couldn't put this book down. All I can say is it made me laugh and I will definitely read the whole series. The narrator was great.

Enjoyable Cinderella retelling

Read from February 04 to 17, 2012

4.25 stars.

Thoroughly enjoyed this Cinderella retelling. It's the first general-market romance novel I've read in some time in which the author actually took the time to develop the relationship between the hero and heroine before they fell into bed together (first time was more than midway through the book). I also quite liked both of the characters, and each was well-developed with unique personalities. This was my first Eloisa James book and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of them.

UPDATE: Apparently this was a one-off for me with Eloisa James. I tried reading the subsequent books in this series and while I did finish When Beauty Tamed the Beast and it was okay, I quit The Duke is Mine only part of the way through because I couldn't stand the heroine. In reading reviews of her books, it seems like those who love the later books in the series (or other books by James) didn't like this one very much. So if you've read and enjoyed other books by EJ, apparently this one is a departure from her normal writing style.

A fun twist on a classic and a delightful story. Funny and lighthearted. Certainly enjoyed it. As always Ms Duerden gives an excellent performance.
