Publisher's Summary

London barrister Jason Jonquil has spent his entire life working to establish his identity as a gentleman, a man of refinement like his father and brothers. But when fiery Spanish beauty Mariposa Thornton walks into his office, he finds himself losing his grasp on his dignified character. The woman is infuriating, pushing him to the limit of his legendary patience. However, her case seems simple enough - a small matter of inheritance. Or so he believes.

Once a well-born lady, Mariposa fought to survive the brutalities of Napoleon's war on Spain. She braved horrific perils and undertook dangerous missions on behalf of those fighting against the invading French army. But her greatest battle still lies ahead: after being separated from her family, Mariposa sets in motion a plan to reunite with her loved ones in England. To avoid drawing the attention of the French, Mariposa dons a carefully crafted persona to conceal her true purpose.

As Jason and Mariposa are drawn together by the case, they come to know the people beneath the masks they both wear. When the truth of Mariposa's quest is revealed, the couple is pulled into a mystery that will test the limits of their courage - and expose the true desire of their hearts.

"Boring, Waste of Time, No Story"
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

No one will enjoy a book that lacks a story.

    Any additional comments?

I should have stopped at the first chapter. The most horrible purchase I have made on Audible.

    "Another wonderful Jonquil story."

The little glimpse of Jason and Mariposa I saw in a previous book, had me thrilled to finally get to hear their story. And like Sarah's other books, this one was full of love, humor, and heart.
    Oh those poor potatoes.

"Sarah Eden has done it again."

Sarah Eden has done it again. A fine gentleman is everything you would expect from a Story of the Jonquil family. Jason's story is perfectly intertwined with his brothers'.

    MY TAKE
I listened to the audiobook and the narrator did a great job.

Now this book! This book! *sigh*

I will disclose that at first I did NOT like Mariposa at all. But let me say that if you find yourself in the same situation, please keep reading!

My issue is probably a personal one because I have a particular loathing for being manipulated--and for manipulators. And Mariposa, in that first chapter, is a terrible manipulator. She didn't do it by going after Jason's emotions (I doubt that would have worked). She did it by mocking and insulting him. He wasn't used to being treated that way and ended up looking stupid for letting her get away with it.

HOWEVER, it doesn't take very long before you get into Mariposa's POV and you start to get a feel for her character and motivations for doing what she did. It doesn't make it right. But that's a huge part of her character arc.

Once she becomes a sympathetic character and Jason is on to her tactics, they almost become funny. By the end of the story, it's actually kind of a running gag between the two.

The romance is tender and sweet and totally sigh worthy.

There's also some excellent growth regarding Jason's issues with his older brother Philip and the way Jason has tended to avoid his family home since his father died ten years ago. It's a wonderful kind of healing that I loved to see, both for Jason as a person and for his relationship with his brother.

Also, Mariposa gets involved with something at the end of the book that made my heart sing. I won't spoil it, but it shows what a great heart she has.
