A Darker Dream (Love Spell Romance) | [Amanda Ashley]

A Darker Dream (Love Spell Romance)

In all his 400 years, Rayven never met a woman like Rhianna McLeod. She is a vision of light, of warmth, of everything he is not - nor can ever be. Doomed to live forever in darkness and solitude, he knows all too well the risk in getting close to her, yet he hungers for her with a fierce passion he swears he will never allow himself to feel. Rhianna's father sold her to Rayven to put food on the table so she had no choice but to go with the dark stranger. To her surprise, he gives her everything she wants: the finest clothes, education, and the run of the castle - everything, that is, except his touch.

Publisher's Summary

For although she senses danger beneath the soft-spoken manner, although even Rayven himself warns her to stay away, she is drawn to this creature of the night, and loves him as she will no other.

What the Critics Say

"Amanda Ashley is a masterful storyteller. This novel is so rich in sensuality and imagery that readers will be entranced by this haunting tale of a vampire who finds love too late and the woman who may savehim from the darkness. This is one keeper...” (Romantic Times)

    "I jus needed something..."
What did you love best about A Darker Dream (Love Spell Romance)?

The story was well written and I didn't find myself bored with a lot of unnecessary fluff

What other book might you compare A Darker Dream (Love Spell Romance) to and why?

This book is very similar to every other vamp book you've ever read.

Did Christine Padovan do a good job differentiating all the characters? How?

Yes and that's about all she did properly. Her cadence was all wrong and the voice she used for the leading male was awful... didn't appeal or give any desirability

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

Just an ordinary vamp falling for an ordinary girl…

    Any additional comments?

This is a good read if you're bored and just need something..

"Beautifully written and sensually narrated story"
What made the experience of listening to A Darker Dream (Love Spell Romance) the most enjoyable?

The narrator's sensuous way of telling the story. Not sure why some of the listener comments hate her 'cadence' - this is a story taking place in a different country and era, and she fitted her voice to the author's writing style, characters and timeframe perfectly.

Hearing the different accents (Irish, French/Russian? and Italian) was enjoyable too. Not always perfect, but nicely done and distinctive.

Would you recommend A Darker Dream (Love Spell Romance) to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes, it is beautifully written prose, but the back and forth between the two main characters (he wants her; he pushes her away; he begs her to stay; she is scared, then changes her mind, stands her ground, etc.) was a little much sometimes.

I think this story would be even nicer in an abridged version. And it was nice to listen to a vampire story that took place in another time (1840's Ireland) versus a lot of the modern day vampire stories floating around these days.

Which character – as performed by Christine Padovan – was your favorite?

Rhianna as the woman who loved the vampire Rayven so much, she was willing to become a vampire to be with him forever. Then her mom was another favorite :-)

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Toward the end with Ravyen's ancient vampire friend, Salvatore in the chapel - but if I have say exactly what it is, it will spoil the wonderful ending for new listeners of Amanda Ashley!

    Any additional comments?

Nice to see this award winning author's older best sellers come into audio form.

    "Slightly Disappointed"
Where does A Darker Dream (Love Spell Romance) rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

    In the middle

What was one of the most memorable moments of A Darker Dream (Love Spell Romance)?

If I say it will spoil the story for others

    Any additional comments?

I had previously read the paperback and loved it. The audio version seems too slow for the first half of the story. I almost quit, but am very glad I didn't, the second half more than made up for the first half.

"AMANDA ..... WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO YOU ?"

I love AA's work USUALLY but, although the storyline was good, it seemed to be repetitive and slow. In my opinion it should have been a much shorter book.

Then there's the bad narration - PAY ATTENTION PUBLISHERS - read the reviews of the people who buy and actually try to listen to these books 'cause the narrator WILL make or break a book and this one nearly broke it so be warned.

Worth a credit? What can I say, I listened on double speed and even then it seemed to drag on but I liked the storyline - so it's 50/50.

"Badly written, appallingly read.Couldn't finish it"
What would have made A Darker Dream (Love Spell Romance) better?

    Nothing could salvage this

Has A Darker Dream (Love Spell Romance) turned you off from other books in this genre?

    Yes

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Narrator sounded like Ralphie from The Simpsons, faking (badly) an Irish accent. Wildly wrong for a story set in the south of England. Giving the heroine a child-like voice made it even more annoying.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

    None whatsoever

    Any additional comments?

    I'd have found a 'phone-book more entertaining.

    "Worst Audio performance!"
What would have made A Darker Dream (Love Spell Romance) better?

    A different narrator.

How could the performance have been better?

The performance was overly dramatized, the voices and accents were awlful. The candance was really off.

    Any additional comments?

Normally I am a big Amanda Ashley fan, but the performance of this book was so bad that I am afraid to purchase other Amanda Ashley books.

"Narrator ruined this from the very first sentence"

I was really looking forward to listening to this book. The narrator's horrible reading ability and embarrassing attempts at accents makes you almost feel sorry for her.....almost. At least she got paid for the job. I actually paid to listen to her. Now that's embarrassing!

    "Narrator detracts from story line"
What did you like best about A Darker Dream (Love Spell Romance)? What did you like least?

Love this author and I have enjoyed everyone of her books but this narrator attempts multiple accents which are horrible. The voice she imparts for the lead character invokes images of the hunch back of Noterdame not the sexy-masculine gorgeous leading men typical for this author. It is so distracting that the book is barely tolerable. It will help if you increase the speed to 1.5 x. But if you haven't purchased the audio version yet, skip it and get the written version.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Christine Padovan?

    Kristen Potter

Could you see A Darker Dream (Love Spell Romance) being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Not based on the audio version
