Publisher's summary

Life is the ultimate game of hide and seek... and the good news is that you're it! With the combination of playful irreverence and penetrating insight that made him a legend in Western philosophy, Alan Watts investigates the surprisingly liberating concept of "the universe as play" found at the heart of Hinduism, Zen, and other wisdom traditions.

Carefully selected by his son and archivist Mark Watts, You're It: On Hiding, Seeking, and Being Found features more than 10 hours of newly restored historic talks from the "spiritual entertainer" who helped define Eastern thought to audiences in the West. Here is a rare chance for listeners to experience the enduring brilliance of one of the greatest spiritual voices of the 20th century.

Powerful observations - expanded my mind

This is a compilation of lectures that makes for easy listening in small bites. Definitely worth listening to repeatedly.

Alan Watts' voice is full of a positive energy, so listening to him speak is somehow uplifting. But, it's the ideas and observations he shares that gave me "lightbulb moments" and changed my perception or point of view, a little.

Little seeds were planted along the way as I listened and I wonder what will come of them. In a way, I wish this kind of audiobook was listened to by many people, but I know that I wouldn't have been interested in this ten years ago, and perhaps a person interested in Reality Shows or what the Kardashians' are wearing might not be interested in observations on life, consciousness, and humanity viewed as a whole or individually.

I guess this is a perfect listen for someone interested in why we are here, who we are, what we can do, how we can do it . . .

You are the universe experiencing itself.

Alan Watts has perfect balance between humor and serious ideas. His storytelling is exceptional. I wish I could forget this audiobook just to listen and experience it all over again. Perfect to listen right before you go to sleep, or in your car on the drive to the gym. I completely recommend this audiobook to anyone and everyone.

Refreshing

Waited to get my monthly credit before picking this one up as apposed to paying full price as it is kinda steep. All in all this is an excellent summary of Eastern philosophies. Alan Watts describes himself as a stand up philosopher or spiritual entertainer, and he does just that. By engaging and challenging the audience he offers a perspective that's definitely worth contemplating. One of the sharpest minds of his time and definitely the most fun to listen to. Highly recommend this if you're at all interested in Hinduism, Buddhism, Zen, or just want to explore something different from typical religious views. No matter what domination you may be you are sure to learn a few things about yourself if you listen to this with an open mind.

Should be Required Reading

Anyone intellectually curious in any way about themselves and their relationship to the rest of the world/universe should read this book. It is one of the best books I’ve ever read, and I plan to recommend it to basically everyone who asks.

Watts is maybe the best intermediary between eastern and western philosophy/theology that I’ve ever had the pleasure of listening to. He manages to (incredibly) bridge the secular and spiritual in a succinct and digestible way, all the while challenging all the judgements of all religions.

I went into this book thinking that I’d learn a thing or two about self-help philosophy the way that I have with other texts on spirituality, and I walked out of it realizing how silly the whole notion of that was. Watts, almost via the Socratic method, completely picks apart all these notions of self-help, meditation, and religious practices like prayer, then ties a bow of reality around all of it. The conclusion of the lectures, that one is not a separate entity from the universe or earth but rather an expression of it, is direly lacking in most dialogues about most issues, both then and today.

What I loved most about this book is that it offers a sort of olive branch between spirituality and atheism: you can be secular, you can leave all the silly prayers behind, and still be in concert with the universe. It’s not just comforting, it’s game-changing, and I’m grateful for being able to hear his perspective in his own words.

Seriously, take the time to enjoy this book if you’re interested in philosophy at all. It’s worth your time.

The essential knowledge for human consciousness by Alan Watts

I’ve listened to much AW on YouTube, and I’d say that these talks were the mastered versions of his enlightening lectures.
Thanks and praise for Alan. Maya was no match.
