Under the Overpass

Night after night Mike and Sam found their beds under bridges and on the streets. They were forced to depend on the generosity and kindness of strangers as they panhandled to sustain their existence. For more than five months, the pair experienced firsthand the extreme pains of hunger, the constant uncertainty and danger of living on the streets, exhaustion, depression, and social rejection-and all of this by their own choice.

This is their story. Through Mike's firsthand account, Under the Overpass provides important insight into the truths of the street and calls the younger generation of believers to take great risks of faith to bring Christ's love to the neediest corners of the world.

"Be ready to change your life"

The author and his friend lived an experience most people never want to go through and few would willilngly enter. They entered into homelessness without backups of extra cash, credit cards or a secret place to shower or eat. They introduced homeless people as individuals in all of their strengths and weaknesses. I was amazed at the way these men stuck to their plan and did not share their "real identity" or do anything to set themselves apart in the eyes of the homeless or non homeless. They ended the book in a great epilogue that gave advice to anyone who wanted to help homeless people as individuals and as a group. I am awed by what these men did in order to really know what it means to love our neighbors and to really care about others.

"living out Jesus with the homeless"

A beautiful book describing two young, Christian men that want to explore the homeless condition in America up close and personally. These guys not only take their faith seriously but live it out. Every pastor should read this especially those that oppose social justice. These guys live out Jesus.
Along their journey you'll have their answer to the question should I give money to panhandlers? You'll also hear their critique for churches that don't respond to Jesus' question 'where were you when I was hungry?'
My favorite quote: "Love can't cover wrongs if we let frustration keep us apart." This was Mike's response when they decided to revisit a church that kicked them out but responded with grace the second time around.

    Story
    "Intriguing and Challenging"
What made the experience of listening to Under the Overpass the most enjoyable?

The content. The idea of these guys doing something so extreme is amazing. Hearing what they encountered along the way is what kept me listening

Did the narration match the pace of the story?

The narration was adequate. I could tell right off that it was read by the author because the reading felt rushed. But it was clear and easy to understand. I was able to follow along and the content took over the listening experience for me anyway.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I don't know that I had an extreme reaction, but I did have a very strong, emotional reaction. It challenged my tendency to "look the other way" when I see less fortunate people around me. Now instead of trying to get away from them I am challenged to find someway to engage in their life and/or to help in some way.

    "Motivating"

This book motivated me to get off my butt and make a difference. Yankoski and his friend really stepped out and took risk to do the right thing. This is their story and not too preachy.

    "Raw Faith"

Absolutely amazing! I truelly felt what these guys experienced. They took what God gave them and gently evangelized people whom most of us ignore. All the while they lived a peasants existence for the cause. This book is well written and really fun to read. I just couldn't wait to hear what happened next. What struck me was that even though they sat out on a journey to find something for themselves, the real prize was the fact that they touched so many others in the process. Makes me want to find my own mission for the cause of Christ. I'll pray about it.

    "I Feel I've Been There"

Absolutely fabulous! This author, with his experiences, takes the reader to the very landscape of a world few of us have ever even come close to imagining. The places he uncovered both in the physical and the spiritual world leave the reader with almost a challenge to seek the place out for real. He makes it easy, however, to experience without the dreadlocks and without the stained clothing or marred skin. This is truly a book for every person to experience. If you are able to purchase this book, you are already more blessed than the people (yes, people) the author has crossed paths with in this incredible reflection of "being there" - nowhere.

    "Surpassing the underpass"

A very realistic look at the downcast, pasted over and forgotten part of our great nation. Dirty, gritty, flithy children of God and how they are challenged in a society who has forgotten they exist. Great thing Jesus came to save these whos dirt is easy to see as well as those who hide it.

    "Changes the way you think..."

Under the Overpass was a great story. It gave me a new way to look at the homeless and I so appreciated the christian perspective. I recommend it and challenge you to open your eyes to a growing problem.
