"This is a powerful recording. He sweeps the listener into the heart of the Word of God." (AudioFile)
I was concerned when I read a few other reviews that some books of the Bible might be missing, but it is all there - the complete Bible. A part will be titled the first book of the Bible that is contained in that part, however the part will contain other books if they are short and can fit into the time span of a normal part. I believe that is what has confused some listeners. I have listened to the entire audio version and it is all there. The narration by Max McLean is wonderful. He brings the words to life. I canot imagine a better choice for narrator. And the soft musical background is soothing. This is an audio book that I will listen to over and over again.
At first I was a bit disappointed in the reading style presented in this audiobook, but after the part about Sodom and Gomorrah, I had to turn off my iPod for a moment and catch my breath. This is definitely worth the purchase! The language is contemporary but not in a way that detracts from the stories of the Patriarchs. Outstanding!!
I realize my rating is a bit odd, so please read why.
I was quite familiar with this particular version of the Bible and the narrator, I had purchased a Kindle just to have this Bible in an easy to lift format. However, I believe the purchaser should be warned that the books of the Bible are installed as separate books not as chapters within a book. Some of the short books are lumped together, but instead of installing one book, you end up with almost 60 different books making looking for anything else on the Kindle quite cumbersome. The other item is that is takes up almost all the Kindle, leaving room for just a few other books.
The advantage of installing the books as separate books rather than chapters is of course you can remove parts of the Bible to make room for other books as necessary, but who wants bits and pieces of the Bible? I'm quite certain if I did that the one passage I need would be in a book I'd archived.
While I see advantages to the way this was done, I feel the purchaser should be warned in advance. That said, I truly like this version, prefering it over others and feel the narrator, Max McLean is the best. Not only do I enjoy his voice, he has in some places changed the way I understand the Bible and the people. I've listened to several versions of the Bible and have heard others narrate this version, this is the first one I went to when I purchased my Kindle and while I have others, this will be my main "go to" Bible both audible and hardcopy.
This description said this is a COMPLETE audible bible, but I am missing 29 books!
Where are the books of :
Ruth, Nehemiah, Esther, Song of Songs, Lamentations, Joel, Amos, Jonah, Micah, Habakkuk, Haggai, Zechariah, Malachi, 1st Corinthians, 2nd Corinthians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, 2nd Thessalonians, 1st Timothy, 2nd Timothy, Titus, Philemon, James, 2nd Peter, 1st John, 2nd John, 3 John and Jude? Very disappointed that they are missing...
Audible has broken this into numbered parts and no provision for finding a particular book of the Bible. The audiobook in itself is wonderful but if your desire is to listen to a certain book of the Bible, there is not a name of a book of the Bible to be found. There is Part 1 - 37. Very disappointed
Obviously the book of John is wonderful but I also really enjoyed the narrator. His reading style is very unique and captivating. The background music is good because it doesn't distract the listener from the reading yet adds a little "something" to the expression of the book itself.
I've been wanting this Bible in audiobook for some time. I have the DVD by same author/narrator and it's great to study when I go to bed or in the morning. Plays great in my CD/DVD standalone player. Narration is great. I'm used to the drone note in the background.
However, this is a common complaint from iTunes downloads from audible, the chapters download in _alphabetical order_. The Book was not written with Acts as the first book. No matter what you do in iTunes it is this way. A major nuisance. What you have to do is make a "playlist" and put all the books in it then rearrange the books in Biblical order. This confuses iTunes since you have the book in audiobooks out-of-order but in a the correct order in the playlist. iTunes will, in most cases, drop the entire playlist (trust me, I've done this several times now having spent hours trying to keep the playlist in the correct oder). I called apple support and they have no cure other than what I've done. However, when you sync your iPod Touch (in my case), the playlist disappears (the software doesn't recognize one order in "audiobooks" library and the playlist in my device. A major pain. I emailed audible regarding this problem several days ago and have gotten no response, so I will probably be cancelling due to this non-response.
Purchasers of Listener's Bible at the home website have complained and complained about this anomaly but get no response from Fellowship for the Performing Arts or a "what can I do" response (if any). I believe it's the software (iTunes) since there is no Part number for the books for the program to refer to in order to get the books Genesis-Revelation. Now you _could_ number the book sections in number order but that could be risky as well. Be aware of this if you download for iTunes. It will be all out-of-order in your audiobooks library. Caveat emptor on this one...
Other than that, I gave a lot of stars for this because it's a valiant and coherent reading of the Bible. Get it for CD (mp3) is my recommendation and forget iTunes (a crappy program to begin with and their updates are worse than before).
The English speaker is excellent, not too fast, very clear, easy to listen to and understand, but the one and only musical note playing in the back ground set my nerves on edge, and I would gladly do without it and just listen to the speaker. I wish there were some way to fix this problem for me at least. This applies to all the books of "The Listener's Bible NIV (Unabridged)"
...was so I could get this for my audio player and listen to it on the road. I have been through the entire Bible twice, and though it's not perfect (background music can be odd at times, reader's voice volume and emphasis change greatly from one chapter to the next, word emphasis and pronunciation seem strange in places, etc.)it is a blessing to have and hear.
Well worth the price, especially with membership. I would recommend for everyone.
"A new way of learning"
I've tried to read books of the bible on a number of occasions but nearly always have problems with understanding certain parts of the text. The Listener's bible makes everything so much easier to understand. Sometimes the text I was having problems didn't have the correct punctuation. Quite often commas etc and even full stops are missing. Listening to the text read out with all the pauses in the right place suddenly makes things clear. I have two small problems, First, Mr Maclean is nowhere near as entheusistic about the books in the old testament as he is in the new testament, he really brings the new testament to life. The second is that it seems strange to me(a Welshman) to hear the bible read with an American accent. The funny thing is when he(Mr Maclean) gets to the new testament the American accent disapears.
"Comprehensive and different"
I bought this as sometimes you hear things that you don't see when you're reading. It's also nice to listen to a little bit on the daily commute. The reader (Max McLean) has an amazing voice, which really brings texture and depth to verses that you may already know but haven't thought of in a particular way. The story I guess you all know :-) and it's all here - amazing for one audio book. Overall I only gave it 4 stars as the audio chapters aren't aligned to the books of the bible and this makes navigation a little tricky at times, particularly as I tend to dot about rather than reading from cover to cover.
No. After reading loads of reviews, I decided to get this but all it does for me is make the bible sound awful. The reader does a shocking job and I got so annoyed at it that i could not listen anymore!
Anyone else but him.
There are already a few biblical films out and the book as a whole probably could not be made into a film because of its length.
Do not buy this book, look for another bible!
Of equal value as the written version.
Can listen while commuting or doing manual labour.
Jesus (of course). It wouldn't matter who was reading!
God's love story.
Max McLean narration of these wonderful words are delivered with both Passion and Certainty making this particular rendition All Very Good!
"Thanks for the help"
I have been trying to read my Bible for years, i am dyslexic and find reading a huge challenge. I have listened to more of the Bible and absorbed each word more through this aidio book than my whole life. I am really enjoying the speaker he really tells it well. thank you.
"The readers voice is sooo annoying"
Why cant he just read it out? What is he doing with his voice and intonations etc? I mean really?
There is no sound I can't get it to play. Tried everything. Please advise me.
