Editorial reviews

Among the New Testament's most consequential passages, the Last Supper describes Jesus' final night with his disciples before his arrest, crucifixion, and enormous sacrifice for the sins of humanity. Taking listeners to the source, this iMinds case study examines the scriptural nuances of this pivotal event as they are depicted the New Testament's Four Gospels. Hosting the proceedings, actress Ellouise Rothwell explores how the Last Supper continues to play an important role in Christian faith and worship - commemorated by the breaking of bread and drinking of wine in Holy Communion, also known as the Eucharist - and explains how different denominations vary in their understanding of the sacrament. Rothwell's lucid, evenly paced delivery provides listeners an informative and thorough introduction to this important religious event.

Publisher's summary

Learn about the Last Supper with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. “While they were eating, he took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them, and said, ‘Take it; this is my body.’ Then he took a cup, gave thanks, and gave it to them, and they all drank from it. He said to them, ‘This is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed for many.”

In the Gospel according to Mark, we read of the night before Jesus was arrested, before he was taken to his death on the cross. On his last night on earth, he shares bread and wine with his twelve chosen disciples. This - his Last Supper - continues to be remembered and rehearsed as an important event in the Christian faith. Alongside the act of baptism, it is held up as one of the most important traditions of Christianity, for both were introduced and commanded by Jesus himself. However, the way people over time have understood the Lord’s Supper, and the way they now approach the ceremony that represents it, vary greatly.

Excellent Details on The Last Supper

This is one of the best of the iMinds shorts in my opinion. If one is coming to the subject of The Last Supper with no knowledge of what it is or why it happened, this seven minutes will bring them to a fairly good understanding of its meaning. I was very pleased that the differences in Protestant and Catholic beliefs concerning partaking of the Lord's Supper were covered, in particular the need to go to confession prior to receiving it versus the need to examine one's self prior. The subject of whether or not Christians who have sinned must refrain from partaking was also addressed. Leonardo da Vinci's painting of the Last Supper in 1495 and the impact it has had on Christianity and the understanding of Christ's last night with his disciples was covered. The music throughout the audio was soothing to listen to, as well. Excellent audio short.
