As a young seeker almost 40 years ago, Thurman first journeyed to Dharamsala, where he became the first Westerner ordained by His Holiness the Dalai Lama. Now, Thurman guides you lucidly through the unifying principles of Tibetan Buddhism's many branches. You will discover Tibetan Buddhism's detailed map of the "bliss state of enlightenment", the principles of tantra for opening the doors to "infinite compassion and continuity", and how to overcome the dangers of the spiritual quest to discover states of consciousness that transcend even death.
Finally, here is Robert Thurman on audio, offering a rich and intellectually riveting retreat program, complete with many specific meditations and spiritual practices to fully immerse you in the mysteries of The Jewel Tree of Tibet. More than nine hours of compelling study with one of Tibetan Buddhism's greatest teachers.

I find that the best way to understand Buddhism is to listen and to practice. Reading, reading endlessly, consuming books, my eyes jump from one page to another in rapid succession, for me that is what I've done my whole life. There is no end to reading! But to listen intently to a learned speaker takes time, dedication, and almost a personal engagement with the nuances, humor, and vitality of that speaker. I would recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn about the Dharma.
I have only begun to recognize how vast Thurman's knowledge is about Tibetan Buddhism and Tantra. Enjoy!
Robert Thurman gives another brilliant elucidation of Tibetan Buddhism. He draws from his personal life experience, wisdom and extensive knowledge of the Tibetan culture and history as he discusses how we may all walk the path to Buddhahood.
love the idea of the meditation practice ,and I love practicing it .the only thing I would change is the guys voice lol but overall I really loved it and would recommend it to all :)

It seems to open new thoughts or change your perception He seems to remind me of .(who has inspired me as )
I was not sure about the approach at first but the sessions picked up a nice rhythm and were quite enjoyable. I suspect I will visit the Jewel tree often as well as relisten to the program in the future.
No, I prefer to digest the information and then continue
Robert Thurman wins
Robert's delivery, he really believes what he's communicating, and he really enjoys communicating it.
Thurman's ornate descriptiveness
It's hard not to smile once and a while during a listening session. Yet, it's also hard to believe that starving children in some way deserve their fate because of karma-crimes in past lives, or that we need love Hitler as he may have once been our mother in a past life. Any and every religion is going to posit odd and disconcerting beliefs, however.
Robert Thurman has done a Ted Talk on the subject of Buddhism. It's short and is a great primer for this book. If you enjoy his Ted Talk, you should definitely pick up this book, you won't be disappointed.

Robert Thurman has made the Tibetan Book of the Dead, as well as the history of Tibetan Budhism, directly accessable to me. This text can only equal or surpass that tome. It has helped me to Awaken. I bow to the Buddha living, and emanating, from his kindness.
