Editorial reviews

In the theology of the Church of Latter-Day Saints, The Book of Mormon is the word of God which recounts "the history and God’s dealings with the people who lived in the Americas between approximately 600 BC and 400 AD". The origins of this holy book are fascinating: An angel supposedly told Joseph Smith, in 1827, where to find the buried golden plates that contained the ancient scripture.

On his website, Sean Crisden justly boasts that he has "the voice of reason". In this performance of The Book of Mormon, complete with helpful chapter numbers and verse notations, Crisden's voice is almost as smooth and authoritative as a true prophet's.

Publisher's summary

Here is an audio edition of the sacred text of the Latter-Day Saint movement that followers believe contains the writings of ancient prophets who lived on the American continent from approximately 2200 B.C. to A.D. 421. A fascinating listen for religious scholars and denominational adherents alike.

Hard to listen to--broken up with verse numbers

Would you try another book from Joseph Smith and Church of the Latter-day Saints and/or Sean Criden?

Yes, but not scripture because of the naming of every verse. Chapter headings would be enough

Book was read entirely wrong.

If you could sum up The Book of Mormon in three words, what would they be?

The Book is flawless the reader was ridiculous. Maybe he should have checked before he repeated every chapter title and verse number.

What did you like best about this story?

This is a religious book that has important doctrine about Jesus Christ.

What didn’t you like about Sean Crisden’s performance?

Tell Mr Crisden he should have talked to someone LDS (Mormon) on how we read this book. He had no clue and made listening to it impossible. Every single verse number. IE he read I Nephi 1:1 then I Nephi 1:2 :2. It would be like reading a regular book and going Chapter 1 paragraph one one. Then the next paragraph Chapter 1 Paragraph 2 two. I would recommend you have him redo this. I Nephi (read as First Nephi not one Nephi) is one entire book. He would read I Nephi Chapter 1, then read the entire chapter without all the verse numbers being added. Then when you get to chapter 2 You read Chapter 2. Then start reading through the entire chapter and so on. Then when you get to the second Book that would be read Second Nephi the next book is Jacob. Each book has so many chapters. And the chapter headings were left out. They are usually read before starting the verses each chapter. (not critical just usually)

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The way it was read made it to annoying to get very far.

Any additional comments?

I guess I should download the bible and see if someone read it Matthew 1:1 Mathew 1:2.

Terrible narration

Loved the content, but horrible rendition. The narrator states the book and chapter and verse number, and then repeats the verse number, for EVERY VERSE. (Eg "First Nephi Chapter One, One, One... I Nephi.... First Nephi Chapter One, Two, Two...) drove me bonkers and I couldn't listen past the first chapter.

A good alternative to the standard recording

It is nice to be able to control the playback speed and to skip the chapter headings, sometimes.

Great for repeated listening

Narrator has the right amount of theatrics. Very clear speech. Easily listen faster speed. I am using this as a review source as I've read the Book of Mormon many times.

Very poor production

Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?

Well except for all the time I spent listening to the author repeating the numbers of the chapter and verse.

What didn’t you like about Sean Criden’s performance?

Very flat. It would be a fantastic audio book if it had been done like a performance. But it sounded like a librarian reading a dictionary.

Do you think The Book of Mormon needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?

I'd like to read the 2/3rds of the Golden Plates that were sealed, yes

Any additional comments?

I really hope you redo this. I would be enthralled if this was done without the verses and with a passionate perfomer narrating it. This was a disappointment.

Not pleased with the narrative style

Would you consider the audio edition of The Book of Mormon to be better than the print version?

No

What did you like best about this story?

Content is interesting

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Sean Criden?

Anyone who doesn't keep repeating the book, chapter and verse with every single verse.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

3 Nephi

Any additional comments?

Record this again without the book, chapter and verse with every single verse and then I might download it to my Kindle again. Until then I will just continue to read the book.

Another Testament of Jesus Christ!

If you could sum up The Book of Mormon in three words, what would they be?

The Book is True!

What other book might you compare The Book of Mormon to and why?

I compare it to The New Testament, because it is a composition of a family, through the ages that struggles to follow God's command..with great opposition by two of the brothers who start their own clan. It is a story of great adventure as the Nephites send missionaries to the misguided Laminites to try and save them. It is full of mighty spirit filled sermons and testamonies...It also is a book for our day..as it tells of the Gadianton Robbers who were a secret society who infiltrated the government and turned the minds of the people. The account unfolds as each head of the Nephite population writes down an account of his days ..some of them are long and some incredibly short...but always fascinating as it tells of great faith in the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ!!

What didn’t you like about Sean Crisden’s performance?

He was really terrible and I was very disappointed because having finally found the Book on Audible his reading was tedious and why he gave the book, chapter and verse with EVERY verse, is incomprehensible to me!! There are so many talented narrators why this man was chosen is a mystery.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I was moved by the Spirit as I know the story well...and despite the narrator, it is always good to renew the account of a very great and faithful account of the Journey they embarked on being led by the Hand of God.

Any additional comments?

Please Audible...replace this recording with a narrator who can bring this beautiful book to life for the benefit of all who listen!!

This book contains the words of Christ

If you listen to this book as if Christ is speaking to you, pray to know if the words are his, and try to listen with your heart as much as your mind, you can know that this is a record of God's children on the American continent and a record of Christ's teachings among them after his crucifixion and resurrection. I leave my own testimony that the words in this book are the words of Christ to us in our time.
