Publisher's summary

All parents hope their child will be self-reliant, optimistic, and well mannered, but this has become particularly challenging in our current culture. Clinical psychologist and Jewish educator Wendy Mogel distills the ancient teachings of the Torah, the Talmud, important Jewish thinkers, and contemporary psychological insights into nine blessings that address key parenting issues. She covers realistic expectations for each child, respect for adults, chores, mealtime battles, coping with frustration, developing independence and self-control, and resisting over-scheduling and over-indulgence.

The Blessing of a Skinned Knee guides us toward effective, enlightened parenting in an increasingly speedy, material, and competitive age.

Critic reviews

"Although she clearly draws on Jewish teachings, as well as on her psychology training, much of her wisdom is applicable to families of all faiths." (Library Journal)
"Her thoughtful observations consistently illuminate and reassure. Impassioned, lyrical, and eminently practical, this inspiring volume is a real treasure." (Publishers Weekly)

Great book, needs a more knowledgeable narrator

As a parenting expert, I Read Every Baby Book, I found this to be a great parenting book and I enjoyed it, but the narrator frequently mispronounced the Hebrew, Jewish words. I found this to be very distracting and somewhat disrespectful.

refreshing reminder!

Common sense stuff, but this book serves as a refreshing reminder of raising kids to be honorable citizens, not necessarily the super competitive, perfect-in-all person. Mogel mentioned that we cannot 2nd guess what skills kids will need in 20 years ([mine]just as 20 yrs ago, people didn't guess the importance of today's software engineering). So it maybe fruitless trying to raise kids to be super-generic, super-competitive beings while missing the "amazing show of childhood". On the otherhand, qualities such as honesty, good work ethics have serve people well for centuries in literally every field of arena.

AMAZING!

This book was placed on my daughters summer reading list. It was recommended as a great read for parents by the school principle. By the time I was on chapter three I was emailing friends to get the book and by chapter eight I was buying it for friends. If you are looking for a book that provides a realistic guide to raising kids and why it is important to allow kids to "learn" and grow through experiences this is the book for you. It is time to stop reading the reviews and download the book you will not regret it.

The Narrator ruins this book

Would you try another book from Wendy Mogel and/or Carrington Macduffie?

The narrator is so bad that it is hard to rate the content of this book. Is it unreasonable to think that she would make an effort to learn the pronunciations of the Hebrew words; there weren't even that many of them? For example, most people know how to pronounce "Passover seder". Macduffie pronounced this Passover Cedar! Her performance made me believe that she was a bored as I was.

What didn’t you like about Carrington Macduffie’s performance?

Everything.

Any additional comments?

I am going to read this book for myself, but perhaps I will listen to this sometime when I can't sleep at night because Macduffie put me right to sleep!

Outdated

A very outdated view of the world filled with religious pandering delivered by a dry narrator

A huge benefit, even for an atheist like me!

Very insightful and thoughtfully written; I wish I'd read this when I was younger, really!

Must read for parents

The book explains a lot of common sense and decency that is lost in our hurried lives these days. Great insight!

A lot to unpack!!!

Not being Jewish or religious at this point in my life I was a little dubious about what would be offered and how I would be able to implement the strategies provided. My doubt was misplaced, while faith provides the framework, the author provides very real and very actionable ways to improve your relationship with your kids and be a better human overall!

Amazing teachings!

I didn’t agree with the author on a couple of ideas because of different religious beliefs; however, the book contains great teachings on child rearing which if followed, the earth would be a much better place.
