Publisher's Summary

"How do I relate to a God who is invisible when I'm never quite sure he's there?" Life has a way of toppling our presumptions as Christians. Just when we're confident we understand God, the bottom drops out. We lose a loved one. Our health fails. Or our own intellect begins to shout objections it once only whispered. Where is God with the answers? How are we supposed to relate to him, anyway?

If you've sensed a disturbing disparity between God's promises and life's realities, between theology and experience, this program is for you. Award-winning author Philip Yancey articulates the fundamental questions that confront us all: How does this Christian faith really work? How do I communicate with God? If God heals, why hasn't he healed my loved one? If he changes people, why am I still the same? How does God work - and how does he work for me?

With trademark candor, Yancey trims away false expectations of God with the twin edges of Scripture and human experience. If you're ready for a spiritual journey that reconciles faith with honesty, start here. Reaching for the Invisible God helps you move from tough questions to a deeper relationship with a God you can trust, love, and live for with all your heart.

"A Christian author has the doubts I do?"

He's been where I've been. At every turn in the book, I see reflections of myself and my doubts about God. He gave me permission to doubt, and to express those doubts to other believers. Instead of undermining my belief, it's strengthened my faith! This book is a must-read for anyone struggling with doubt about the Christian faith. (Which is all of us.)

The book is well-read, and the narrator is always pleasant to listen to.

    "This book offers great insights."

This is such a fundamentally honest book. The author's questions and discussion were very on point and relevent, and helped me to stretch my faith and examine my lack of faith fearlessly. This book is reassuring, warm, challenging. Great narrator as well, he is animated and comfortable. On the down side, I'm not sure the piano interludes with lady narrator add much. Overall a good selection, you won't be disappointed.

    "This Book Goes Deep"

If you like books from authors such as A.W. Tozer you will enjoy this book. I found it deep and immensely helpful in pursuing a deeper walk and understanding of our Savior. Another Yancey book to seriously explore is, "The God I Never Knew". Amazing.

Computer Programmer and Worship Leader. Have enjoyed reading since my mom got me hooked on Nancy Drew and Agatha Christie prior to my teen years. My brother got me hooked on audio books after I started having a longer commute to work. Love a variety of genres.

"Profound, but not as ordered as expected . . ."

I have been familiar with Yancey's writing throughout the years in Christian publications. I always thought his writing was honest and pertinent. Based on my past experiences, I purchased the audiobook.

I generally have two different "takes" on this book. First, there are some really profound things that are said in the book. Yancey's observations on both the strengths and weaknesses of Evangelicalism's view of God was quite insightful. As noted by other reviewers, his candid honesty about doubts and times of spiritual dryness are quite refreshing and, as others have stated, encouraging to those who sometimes feel they are the only ones who feel this way. I especially appreciated his skepticism of "pat answer" faith and the belief that the life of God's children is one of comfort and mindless happiness. He shows quite convicingly that this does not fit with the examples of biblical characters, nor of many of the great saints of history.

On the other side, I found the trains of thought in the book tended to ramble. This could partially be due to the audiobook format, but there didn't seem to me to be a clearly defined structure to the book - more like related observations on the topic, but without considerable feeling of progression. I realize that this will NOT be an issue for some folks, but if you are one who likes a logical progression of thought (think "Mere Christianity" or the like) this may be a bit of distraction for you.

    "A difficult listen"

I chose this book because I enjoyed reading "Whats so amazing about Grace?". But I think in retrospect, this type of book is better in print than in audio. It simply isn't captivating enough for me.

    "Finally a thoughtful Christian book"

I loved this book. I have a great deal of respect for Mr. Yancey. He is upfront with his doubts but remains a commited believer in Christ because, as he states, "whom else should he follow". The shares tragic stories that have shaken his faith and goes on to explain why he continues to believe and why his faith in God has increased.

He explains his journey from simplistic blind faith to a deeper more robust and complex trust in the Lord.

It is refreshing hearing from someone with doubts and questions just like me.
