Publisher's summary

Mere Christianity is C.S. Lewis' forceful and accessible doctrine of Christian belief. First heard as informal radio broadcasts and then published as three separate books, The Case for Christianity, Christian Behavior, and Beyond Personality, Mere Christianity brings together what Lewis sees as the fundamental truths of the religion. Rejecting the boundaries that divide Christianity's many denominations, C.S. Lewis finds a common ground on which all those who have Christian faith can stand together, proving that "at the center of each there is something, or a Someone, who against all divergences of belief, all differences of temperament, all memories of mutual persecution, speaks with the same voice".

Critic reviews

"Geoffrey Howard's performance is superb; he is clear and unhurried, giving just the right emphasis and/or inflection....Whether or not one agrees with Lewis's arguments, it is a pleasure to hear such a skillful reading of an eloquent work." (Library Journal)

Brilliant though dated

Once you get past the patrcentric and homophobic moralism of the time, the theological perspective is fascinating. CS Lewis is always thought provoking.

Great food for thought

Where does Mere Christianity rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a very interesting listen. It presents some challenges for the Christian in a humble manner. I believe many current discussions and viewpoints originated from this book. There is no story or plot, but the discussion is more like a talk or lecture, giving the listener things to contemplate. The playback speed may have to be reduced to catch all of the nuances and points of departure for further discussion.

Who was your favorite character and why?

A Must Read for All Christians

If you could sum up Mere Christianity in three words, what would they be?

Organized Strong Apologetic

Who was your favorite character and why?

There are no characters in Mere Christianity that come to mind

What about Geoffrey Howard’s performance did you like?

Something about British accents seem to make things sound more sophistocated.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Many - Lewis does a great job illustrating topics that have been relevent for over 50 years.

Any additional comments?

Pros: Great apologetic and introduction to the Christian faith for believers and non-believers.
Cons: Due to the time period (1940's) there are a few references that do no translate well.
Bottom Line: A must read for Christians and highly suggested for those who have questions about the Christian faith.

Nothing "Mere" about it

Christianity in terms most people can understand. For Christians and non-Christians alike. C.S. Lewis explains some of the more difficult concepts in a way everyone can relate to. This and Screwtape are two of my favorites.
