Publisher's summary

This complete and unabridged edition of Spurgeon's great work will make it possible for today's generation to appreciate Spurgeon's combination of discerning wit and refreshingly practical advice. Included in the 28 chapters of this classic volume are lectures such as:

  • The Call to Ministry
  • The Preacher's Private Prayer
  • On the Choice of a Text
  • On the Voice
  • The Holy Spirit in Connection with Our Ministry
  • The Blind Eye and the Deaf Ear
  • On Conversion as Our Aim
  • Illustrations in Preaching

As were all of Spurgeon's messages to his people, each of these lectures is Scripture-saturated and Christ-honoring. They move swiftly and are fascinating in their content and sage counsel.

One of the Greatest Pastors of his generation

I have enjoyed listening to this book many times since I bought it. I find it very enjoyable. C.H. Spurgeon was not a formally educated man but was a lifelong student of the Christian faith once he was converted at age 19. He became a preacher who, before microphones could be heard by a crowd of 23,000 people. He actually asked his faithful to stay at home every fourth Sunday so the "unbelievers" would have a chance to hear him. I have read or studied many of the books put out this generation about this pastor that died 120 years ago.
This and many other books have been written in contemporary English as many of the words that were used in Spurgeons day and age are antiquated and not easy to understand. I highly recommend this if you like to listen to the Classic Christian Pastors such as Wesley, Jonathan Edwards, and George Whitfield.

Timeless and priceless

Where does Lectures to My Students rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Absolutely one of the best books I've listened to.

Which character – as performed by Grover Gardner – was your favorite?

The narration was absolutely amazing. I have never heard Charles Spurgeon speak, however Grover Gardner brings his words to life so much that I'm often tempted to think I'm listening to the author himself!!!

Any additional comments?

I often catch myself marveling at how current and relevant this is even though he lived so long ago. I would heartily recommend it to everyone considering serving in ministry.

Indispensable and hilarious!

This is one of the funniest books I have read in ages! Spurgeon’s wit and language is very much like Chesterton’s and he excels in that wonderful British understatement that will have you in tears! At the same time the book is a treasury of insights from the prince of preachers! People from all walks of life, not just preachers, will find this very fruitful!

Still the best book for preachers

Where does Lectures to My Students rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This book is a little out of date for some things but for the principles that make for a good preacher, you cannot beat it. Read portions of this book 40 years ago but it was good to listen to it straight through (over several days)

Every Pastor should read this book ever year

Would you listen to Lectures to My Students again? Why?

Yes, Because Pastors today have lost the art of preaching the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. This book will help them.

Who was your favorite character and why?

C. H. Spurgeon.
Spurgeon was a genius, his mind remembered everything he read and the stories which he tells you, you just don't forget them. He has a great sense of humor.

Have you listened to any of Grover Gardner’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but I will be in the future. Grover has one of those voices that you can listen to all day.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Pastors repent or perish

Any additional comments?

Spurgeon got it right he followed the Apostles in Acts 6 when help was needed they had the people select 7 men to take care of the widows why the Apostles gave themselves to prayer and the study of the Word. He came to the pulpit ready to preach. He prayed a lot and study a lot.

For the Specialist

What would have made Lectures to My Students better?

This is not a devotional, but actual instructions to students in his preachers' college. Its rather long-winden and pedantic. If you are a specialist in Victorian religious times, a Baptist historian, or a rabid Spurgeon fan, than of course this book is for you. But its not a collection of works to study scripture or grow in faith. Lots about breathing and how not to overuse anecdotes.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I would not listen to this again. As a fan of Spurgeon it was worth the ride, bit just barely. I need to purge with some Ursula Le Guin or something, then back in to it.

Which scene was your favorite?

I had no real favorite scene. It was a bit fun to hear how much he loves astronomy, but it teaches the ever painful lesson that illustrations based on science are good only for the time they are written.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Lectures to My Students?

I am not a fan of cutting, and so would not.

Any additional comments?

I am going to return to Spurgeon's sermons at a later time.
