Publisher's summary

Picking up where Bible expert Bart Ehrman's New York Times best seller, Misquoting Jesus, left off, Jesus, Interrupted addresses the larger issue of what the New Testament actually teaches...and it's not what most people think. Here Ehrman reveals what scholars have unearthed:

  • The authors of the New Testament have diverging views about who Jesus was and how salvation works.
  • The New Testament contains books that were forged in the names of the apostles by Christian writers who lived decades later.
  • Jesus, Paul, Matthew, and John all represented fundamentally different religions.
  • Established Christian doctrines, such as the suffering messiah, the divinity of Jesus, and the trinity were the inventions of still later theologians.

These are not idiosyncratic perspectives of just one modern scholar. As Ehrman skillfully demonstrates, they have been the standard and widespread views of critical scholars across a full spectrum of denominations and traditions. Why is it most people have never heard such things?

This is the book that pastors, educators, and anyone interested in the Bible have been waiting for, a clear and compelling account of the central challenges we face when attempting to reconstruct the life and message of Jesus.

    Many questions answered....

This is the 3rd book by Bart D Erhman that I've listened to.. I first listened to "Misquoting Jesus" when I just could no longer pretend to believe what made no sense to me.. From there I listened to "Forged" and recently listened to "Jesus, Interrupted" .

Professor Erhman is a man who started his career as a born again fundamentalist Christian who did not question what he had been taught, but through his own journey, started realizing why the things he believed no longer made sense..

Like all his books, this one is fascinating.. He will take you through the beginning of Christianity and explained why, historically speaking, things did not happen the way we have been told and why the Bible is a book written by man, not by God...

He will tell you why the Bible is an important historical piece of literature that provides us with details of life in that time, but also why it can't be an accurate account of Jesus's life..

If you are searching for answers, or just seeking truths/facts about religion, Jesus and our history, listen to this book.. It is fascinating.. Next book on my list is "How Jesus Became God"... Although I've listened to a number of books on this subject, I'm sure I will walk away with a greater amount of knowledge than I have at this time. His books truly are fascinating.

    Any additional comments?

Um excelente livro para quem quer saber mais sobre a Biblia. Escrito por um estudioso do assunto, Jesus Interrupted abre um novo cenário para esse livro tão importante para a civilização ocidental e ao mesmo tempo tão repleto de incongruências.

An interesting topic discussed by a balanced author

Ehrman writes well, and in such a way that technical aspects of textual criticism are not lost to the general public. His book is easy to understand and interesting to listen to no matter their beliefs or background.

What impressed me most was the evenhanded manner the book is written in. I was originally hesitant to buy this book because I had heard so many times from people who were too preachy of atheists that the book was excellent. But I found Ehrman's book to be moderate and well founded. This isn't poorly researched scholarship, or amateur metaphysics, it is a great way for the average person interested in how the bible came to be to learn about its history.

I see no reason for believers to be threatened by Ehrman, unless they are radical believers who are unable to listen to alternative opinions without anger welling up inside of them.

My first audio book by Bart Ehrman

Would you consider the audio edition of Jesus, Interrupted to be better than the print version?

The printed version would be better if you wanted to use it as a reference to fact check along with the Bible. Although I guess one could write down times instead of dog earing a page or highlighting.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Jesus. It seems as history has built up a

What about Jason Culp’s performance did you like?

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    Any additional comments?

This book is solid and full of easy to digest information. Beware of people who simply disregard this information with statements that link the author to the devil. Bart Ehrman presents facts and evidence that many believers have trouble addressing.

    Very intriguing

Really enjoyed this and helped to shed light on the "roots" of the bible. My only criticism is the repetition, particularly heavy in the final chapter, of the author to keep stressing the importance of reading the bible from a historical perspective. I completely agree, and I still agree after the 50th time I heard him stressing this, and it started to numb my ears. All the same, very much worth the listen.
