Publisher's summary

Picking up where Bible expert Bart Ehrman's New York Times best seller, Misquoting Jesus, left off, Jesus, Interrupted addresses the larger issue of what the New Testament actually teaches...and it's not what most people think. Here Ehrman reveals what scholars have unearthed:

  • The authors of the New Testament have diverging views about who Jesus was and how salvation works.
  • The New Testament contains books that were forged in the names of the apostles by Christian writers who lived decades later.
  • Jesus, Paul, Matthew, and John all represented fundamentally different religions.
  • Established Christian doctrines, such as the suffering messiah, the divinity of Jesus, and the trinity were the inventions of still later theologians.

These are not idiosyncratic perspectives of just one modern scholar. As Ehrman skillfully demonstrates, they have been the standard and widespread views of critical scholars across a full spectrum of denominations and traditions. Why is it most people have never heard such things?

This is the book that pastors, educators, and anyone interested in the Bible have been waiting for, a clear and compelling account of the central challenges we face when attempting to reconstruct the life and message of Jesus.

Interesting approach to the New Testament

Really enjoyed the critical thinking and different approach to the Bible. I would have appreciated less of the personal arguments such comments on articles written about him, his personal agnosticism, etc. It clouds the objectivity and pushes the reader to think a certain way.

    Excellent book, very relevant!

If you're a Christian or even if you're not, this book will give you a much better, more enhanced intelligectual understanding of the Bible, especially the New Testament. Many little-known historical facts in this one!

Insightful, especially with the political landscape today

I have listened to this more than once and every time learn something new. It is especially relevant in todays political landscape where the evangelical Christian’s are becoming more influential in pushing ideologies based on interpretations from the Bible. The author provides a good narrative in some counter arguments when faced with dangerous political agendas.

    His best work

Wonderfully written and presented. Of all Barts books I found this the very best and most cumulative.

Perfect balance of plain language and scholarship

This is the most approachable critical historical look at Jesus and the New Testament that I've yet read. This book should be mandatory reading for everyone, both believers and non-believers, who holds a strong opinion regarding Christianity. It certainly won't turn a non-believer into a believer. It's unlikely to turn a believer into a non-believer. But it is likely to make both sides take less extreme stances regarding the role of Christianity (especially those of the American Evangelical persuasion) in todays society.

well researched and laid out well

I've read many books like this, and while interesting I didn't have any shattering revelations. however it is a solid book. I just wish authors like this one didnt have to express their personal beliefs - just give the facts.

    Very good!

Excelent book for believers and non-believers. I never realized the importance of reading the new testament gospels horizontally instead of the traditional vertical reading. Read the book or listen to the audio to find out!

    Ehrman interrupts Jesus

I have been absolutely enamoured with this book since I download it. Listened more than twice and really enjoy the academic analysis of the 'holy' book. I am an ex Jehovahs Witness and reckoned I knew my (Watchtower) trained scriptures well. It's scary to think the volume of people who hang on the Bible as a truth as to where we are going and what we are. Well argued, intriguing and fascinating the Ehrman work is really on the ball when making its case. It should appeal to seekers of the real truth in all phases of life.

    Life Changing

Don't start this book unless you are willing to hear strong, persuasive, fact based reasoning about the origins of the Bible and the Christian religion. It has changed my life.
