Publisher's summary

Picking up where Bible expert Bart Ehrman's New York Times best seller, Misquoting Jesus, left off, Jesus, Interrupted addresses the larger issue of what the New Testament actually teaches...and it's not what most people think. Here Ehrman reveals what scholars have unearthed:

  • The authors of the New Testament have diverging views about who Jesus was and how salvation works.
  • The New Testament contains books that were forged in the names of the apostles by Christian writers who lived decades later.
  • Jesus, Paul, Matthew, and John all represented fundamentally different religions.
  • Established Christian doctrines, such as the suffering messiah, the divinity of Jesus, and the trinity were the inventions of still later theologians.

These are not idiosyncratic perspectives of just one modern scholar. As Ehrman skillfully demonstrates, they have been the standard and widespread views of critical scholars across a full spectrum of denominations and traditions. Why is it most people have never heard such things?

This is the book that pastors, educators, and anyone interested in the Bible have been waiting for, a clear and compelling account of the central challenges we face when attempting to reconstruct the life and message of Jesus.

A must read to understand Christianity.

The author goes into the heart of Christianity and analyzes Jesus. Are the sayings from the Bible really from Jesus? Did he really teach the Sermon on the Mount? Which version of the Crucifiction is the most accurate? Dr. Ehrman shows us what the evidence supports. A good read for someone interested in Biblical history.

    Incredibly Engaging

Really worth your time, totally fascinating. I’d love to read something in this vein of historical critical research about Islam if anyone has suggestions.

I listen at work and am annoyed when someone needs to talk to me and I have to pause the audio book to listen to them.

    Must listen- Eye opening!

Where does Jesus, Interrupted rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is extremely informative. It should be a must on everybodys list!

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, It does take several sittings to get through the entire book. It is extremely well written and easy to understand.

    Any additional comments?

While many profess to be “Believers", very few take the time to truly examine their beliefs. This is a disgustingly sad fact that as a Judeo-Christian nation most do not even know the basis of such beliefs. If after listening to this book, you still believe in the manmade God of scripture, good for you. At least you had the courage to listen.
