Publisher's summary

There are only two places where the powerful and great in this world lose their courage, tremble in the depths of their souls, and become truly afraid. These are the manger and the cross of Jesus Christ.

No priest, no theologian stood at the cradle of Bethlehem. And yet, all Christian theology finds its beginnings in the miracle of miracles, that God became human.

These stirring words are among forty devotions that guide and inspire readers as they move thematically through the weeks of Advent and Christmas, from waiting and mystery to redemption, incarnation, and joy. Supplemented by an informative introduction, short excerpts from Bonhoeffer's letters, and passages from his Christmas sermons, these daily devotions are timeless and moving reminders of the true gift of Christmas.

Life-changing

This book changes me profoundly. Each day I heard more deeply how God loves me, and grew in a strange desire to serve Him not out of compulsion, but in response.

A Wonderful Advent Treasure

Bonhoeffer’s writings in God is in the Manger are haunting given that he wrote these in a cold German prison not long before being hanged. His writings are thought provoking, touching and ever humble.
The sole drawback to this audio book, and, to a German linguist, unfathomable and offensive: they chose a pleasant timbre voice without consideration of his German language ability! The narrator obviously does Not speak German nor did he master any tutorial on German pronunciation! Every time he said Bonhoeffer, a woeful mispronunciation, it was jarring. When he attempted the phrase ‘Peace on Earth’, it had the opposite effect! I wanted to throw my phone at him! I will say that the narrator did a fine job on nuance and the gentle spirit of the writing when speaking English. A fail on German!
I will buy and recommend others buy the hardcover book or ereader edition for next Advent! This will easily become an Advent reading treasure!

Pithy thoughts for Advent

Astute reflections on waiting from someone languishing away in a nazi prison camp, while his betrothed and his family awaited his release.

A wondrous devotional

Bonhoeffer’s writings about our Lord’s advent are thought-provoking, inspiring, challenging. Listening to this each year makes the incarnation of Christ real to me.

Well done

Great insights and reminders of the truth that Jesus was God in the flesh who came to save us from sin.

Good, but I was Underwhelmed

I was fairly underwhelmed by this piece. I was hopeful that this was an intentional work by Bonhoeffer on advent, but this is actually a publisher-edited compilation of his written work, sermons, even letters that he wrote to his fiancé around the holidays.

Bonhoeffer was imprisoned for vocally opposing Nazi Germany and was executed weeks before Hitler killed himself. He wrote many of these pieces while in prison. This fact and his reflections on his imprisonment really made the book for me. God’s humility and God-ness while in the manger is a difficult concept to wrestle with, and Bonhoeffer does so with joy because of its implications for his imprisonment.

I found it uplifting at times, but overall, not everything I hoped it would be.

This has been a wonderful book to reflect on Jesus’s birth.

This is a wonderful book of Bon Hoffer’s description of the Christ child. I love the different aspects that Bon Hoffer gives us about Christ and his birth.
