This profound look at the life of the biblical figure David digs deeply into the defeats he suffered, and the victories he won, as he faced the giants in his life. When David focused on God, giants tumbled. But when David focused on giants, he stumbled.
Goliaths still roam in our world: Debt. Disaster. Dialysis. Divorce. Deceit. Disease. Depression. These super-sized challenges swagger and strut into our lives, pilfering our sleep, embezzling our peace, and robbing us of our joy. And while these giants try to dominate our lives, we know what to do! We've learned what David learned, and we do what David did. We become God focused. We pick up five stones. We make five decisions. And we take a swing.

I thoroughly enjoyed this audio book. The author surprises you with insights about David's story that impact the reader. This book is a faith builder and a solid account of the widely known bible story of David. From his childhood to his death, this book follows David and teaches priceless principles about the refinement process that we all go through. If you are in need of hope, encouragement, and solid bible teaching, this book is a must read.
Okay, here's a kicker for you. This being my first Max L book, I have to say that his style does not suit me. In fact I started reading the hardback version a sister at church loaned me and had such difficulty enjoying his style of chop-chop comparisons and willy demonstrations that I found reading it a real challenge. So I got the audio book, and I'm glad I did. With the help of the nararator (blessed brother Wayne) I was able to muscle through his odd duck writing and found great treasures and even tears and personal victories within the messages of this generalized story of Davids life, and even grew fond of some of his style before it was all done. In fact I intend to listen to it several times more to catch what was missed in translation the first time around. Will I buy another one of his books? Only in audio, but hey - if it works ...
I liked Max's honesty concerning life's struggles. The book helped me put some things in perspective. It also caused me to want to read the scriptures again concerning David and his life. The book reminded just how much we, in today's world, can relate to the people of the Bible. It helps me know that I am not crazy and that I CAN make it with God's help.
Great writer, down to earth and practical. I enjoyed this book and especially loved the CD version as it is helpful to listen to more than once.
Author is wordy and drags out his points way too long.
I have been leading a character building men's groups for the last few years and learned this material was a MISTAKE.
Lessons and concepts can have some good takeaways but author loses the groups interest as men generally don't care for so much detail.
Study guide is far better than the book. If leading a group make sure to get study guide.
My advice to pass on this book.
This is a clearly expressed book giving examples which are personal and real life experiences.
Wayne Shepherd has an easy listening voice and it is much easier to concentrate while going to the gym.
I loved the wisdom in this book and have since bought other books by the author. It was challenging and made me re assess my reactions to every day events and the things I fear most.
For those of us facing giants, which we all do, this book is for you. It is empowering and inspiring. I also now understand so much more about the character and history of David, this great biblical man. Max Lucado never disappoints and this book is no exception. The narration is clear and easy to listen to. Already looking at more Max Lucado titles on Audio.
