This book is awesome! It made me take a good hard look at myself and see that I can't give up, I can't just accept where I am. I can be healthy and honor God and finish the work He has called me to do. Thank you!
As a man in my early to mid thirties, former college athlete, father of two, husband and friends to many, I struggle with balancing life, fitness and ministry. At times I would go at working out like crazy, but never for the right reasons. My reasons were more Vain or for relieving stress, never for the reasons Gary described in the book as using my body as a temple for God's work. This book changed my thoughts on working out, eating right and just living a happy, healthy lifestyle. Gary helped me to understand I need a healthy body to do God's work and the longer I am healthy the longer I get to do God's work. Since listening to this book my attitude has changed, I look forward to working out and pushing myself harder, because in those hard moments I find myself talking to God more. This book help define "life in balance" for me. I surprisingly was recommended this book by my doctor after some bad blood work and now I have recommend this book to everyone I know. I hope you give this book a try too.
There were so many great points that Gary made that I absolutely loved and will use in future presentations. But there was so much old information that isn't useful, i.e. the myth that fitness is mostly about eating less and training more. Ugh. Otherwise, I enjoyed it.
If you are wondering whether God cares about your body, or how you treat it, get this book! It is very helpful, filled with Scripture and thoughtful assistance.
This book tackles the rarely discussed issue of gluttony and it's role in laziness within our culture. Further, Mr. Thomas brings to light the stewardship of our bodies and how that discipline carries out into other areas of our spiritual walk. Great book.
Thomas was so thorough in his research and digging out the truth about the subject at hand in the Scriptures, I wish he had been as diligent in digging out the truth about what food is truly nourishing. It would have been better if he had not given his recommendations at all. It is misleading for the Christian who has found his other guidance so helpful. Some reference to the work of Dr. Dean Ornish, Dr. John McDougall, Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn, Dr. Colin Campbell or Dr. Neal Barnard would have made it the perfect book.
This is a book about two sins that I have NEVER heard addressed in church: gluttony & sloth! If the information presented wasn't hitting me in the forehead it was punching me in the gut! I needed to hear this! So does everyone else but I cannot control what they listen to or read.
Gary Thomas makes a compelling argument for all of us to consider the care of our body as it impacts the vitality of our soul and effectiveness of our work and ministry. I appreciate his passion and purpose in writing this. He offers many practical ways to equip our soul and body for the race of life ahead.

Self help- no titiles. It is a book that will have an impact on many, so if it is not for you, pass it along to someone you think would benefit from it!
He is the author, so he moves through the book quickly, as he knows the content well.
Eat, drink, and be like Gary.
I heard Gary on a radio interview and it inspired me to get the book. Afterwards I felt that I had received the meat of the book in the interview!
