What particularly distressed Ryle was the scant knowledge of the English Reformation evident amongst his contemporaries. In this lay a grave danger: one of the reasons so many congregations drift from their evangelical foundations is their sheer ignorance of Christian history, and their lack of understanding of the major doctrinal controversies and why they matter.

Hard Copy Recommended
I chose this Audible version instead of ordering the book in print thinking it would be easier to get into each section if I listened to someone else tell the story. Nope! Too much detail. You either need to go back 30 seconds (constantly) to catch the fullness of the biography and stay invested, or you need to be able to see the names, places, order of events, etc. in print.
Bottom line, listening to the book, I feel lost in detail and wish that I was able to see the page!
