First off- let me state that this book contains no information whatsoever about Heaven's Gate, Waco, Jonestown or anything of the sort. It is an extensive discussion of the current pentecostal and evangelical movements in the Christian church. While the things discussed here are radical, they are by no means fringe cult activities that lead to the deaths of church members.
Second- this book is designed for Christians only. I don't mean that in an elitist sense at all, but rather, if you are not currently a Christian, then you probably already think everything discussed is loony and you don't need further evidences of that.
Third- while the author is making some excellent and quite salient points, they are repeatedly overshadowed by his insistence upon using acronyms and alliteration. That might work for young people who need to memorize plant phyla, it's not needed for intelligent adults who are trying to make critical decisions about their faith. It becomes a bit tedious.
It might sound like I hated this book, which I did not. I thought it was quite useful and agreed with the majority of the author's points. It simply wasn't what I thought it was going to be. Christians who are curious about the fruits of the spirit absolutely SHOULD give this a listen and evaluate the material for themselves. But if you're looking for a discussion about modern day cults, this isn't it.
I read the printed copy of this book, but hearing the audio clips of these so-called 'revivals' is unbelievable. You simply must hear what goes on at these places to understand why the author takes the time to draw a disticntion between genuine revival and counterfeit revival.
This is an excellent book for Christians who want to know what kind of false teachings are out there. It is truly amazing how Christians are being lead astray by the likes of people like Benny Hin becaue they do not know the Bible. Hank "The Bible Answer Man" exposes many of these false teachers for who they are. Now you can hear what they say personally and don't have to take anyone's word. It is absolutely crazy what they say and what we believe. This is a must read if you want to keep your walk with Chist fresh and you want to be able to tell the difference between false teachers and real leaders of Christ.
This audio book is fascinating yet frightening. It is one thing to read about various modern day evangelists and their "supposed" false teachings . . . it is quite another to actually hear the blasphemous stuff from their own mouths. Counterfeit Revival, the audiobook, goes where the print version can't; it includes the actual audio clips of the subjects speaking the very heresies that the print version only talks about.
One listen to this and you will realize just how close "the end" must really be. We've come a long long way from the days when Jesus walked the earth with His disciples, and hearing this book really brings that point home.
Great information. Anyone familiar with Hanegraaff's work will appreciate it. I found the cheesy music playing constantly in the background extremely distracting. I had to take this book in chunks because my brain was working hard to separate the narrative from the soundtrack. Very exhausting to listen to, I suggest just reading it.
If you already have misgivings regarding elements of the charismatic movement within Christianity, this book will do nothing to help you further understand it. It is with some delicious irony that I found he uses precisely similar tactics to attempt to discredit 'Holy Ghost drunkards' as they themselves do (which is why the book gets as high as a two star rating from me). The melodramatic music, the voice of doom as he describes the leaders of this movement and the general lack of scholarship are three things that cause this book to fail. I knew nothing of this author before having listened to this book - & I shall never waste another precious $5.47 (or whatever the price of this book was) on another of his works. That is, unless I'm in the mood for listening to a train-wreck in slow motion.
