The recent economic meltdown has cast a harsh new light on these pursuits. In a matter of months, fortunes, marriages, careers, and a secure retirement have disappeared for millions of people. No wonder so many of us feel lost, alone, disenchanted, and resentful.
But the truth is that we made lesser gods of these good things - gods that can't give us what we really need. There is only one God who can wholly satisfy our cravings - and now is the perfect time to meet him again, or for the first time.
The Bible tells us that the human heart is an "idol-factory," taking good things and making them into idols that drive us. In Counterfeit Gods, Keller applies his trademark approach to show us how a proper understanding of the Bible reveals the unvarnished truth about societal ideals and our own hearts.
This powerful message will cement Keller's reputation as a critical thinker and pastor, and comes at a crucial time - for both the faithful and the skeptical.

I love Tim Keller, he is the modern day C.S. Lewis
,,,it really puts a lot of things into perspective. It's so easy to lose your way in this world we live in, and this book clearly defines a lot of the dangers that are set to derail us as individuals. For those that already have accepted that there is a God, and that Jesus has the best message in that respect, this clarifies the 2 most important focal points we should have in order to obtain all we want and need in this life: to love God above all, and our neighbors as ourself. A 'must-have' book for any honest truth seekers. Excellently read
As always, Keller is super helpful here in addressing the heart with neither legalism nor liberalism--but grace.
This book will make you see things in your life that you want to change, that you didn't know about before. I highly recommend this one.
Because of timing, I only "listen" to books, so Im not sure
This was non fiction so I didn't have to worry about character changes, he read clearly and the speed was perfect.
The same as the book Counterfit Gods
The content was apropos for a world stuck in the grind of seeking the next success in various activities and exposes them for what they are in our lives - idols.
Keller is articulate, uses great illustrations and applies Biblical truths masterfully to those who live today.
Tom Parks did a fine job, but having heard Tim Keller, it was odd listening to his book with another person's voice.
The distinction of fashioning gods out of ostensibly good things like the opposite sex, children or work was a total mind-shifter for me.
I also saw how one can fashion idols out of the opposite sex and even work to such a degree that one is paralysed with approach-avoidance, for fear of failing, condemnation or rejection -- all just seeking the "opinions of men" (and women) quite frankly -- a life-long pattern for me, and one that all but instantly dissolved upon seeing how absurd and ungodly it is.
lucid, clear, forthright
Not entirely. I needed time to digest certain elements.
As good as Mr. Parks is, he isn't Tim Keller. It is usually better when the author reads from their book, as certain phrases and meanings the author intended can be walked over. More glaringly, Mr. Keller is such a renowned and talented orator, it seemed odd he didn't read from his own book, if not a tad disappointing, hence four (3 1/2 if I could) stars out of five for that reason alone.
Pastor Timothy Keller reminds us that only God is our source of true joy and satisfaction, everything else are counterfeit Gods.
It is easy to forget and furthermore not even notice the deep rooted idols in our lives. This book shows us the surface idols but goes further to show what is driving those idols. Dr. Keller brings a fresh perspective to some of the Bible stories we think we already know so well and I love the way in which he segues into the Gospel of Jesus Christ at the end of each chapter.
