Publisher's summary

In his most significant book since the immensely successful Inside Out, Dr. Larry Crabb expands on his lifelong work in the field of psychotherapy to adopt a groundbreaking, but biblical, approach to healing the deep wounds of the soul - an approach that centers around building intimate, healing mini-communities in your life and church.

Dr. Crabb envisions a day when communities of God's people - ordinary Christians whose lives connect as husband to wife, brother to sister, friend to friend - will accomplish most of the healing that they now depend on mental health professionals to provide.

God has deposited you within the power to heal soul-disease, and that power is released to do its work as you relate to others in revolutionary new ways. In challenging, practical language, Dr. Crabb shows you how.

"...the culmination of Larry Crabb's life work. It took great courage for him to write it - will the church have courage to follow?" - (Philip Yancey)

Read the reviews more closely

The book got a 4.75 rating so I thought it would be a good book on psychotherapy. Wow! Was I wrong. It was about religion. Had I read the reviews I would not have purchased the book.

A Wonderful Book Poorly Abridged

I love this book and own a physical copy. The audiobook, however, was not my favorite. This is a shame because there is no other place I have been able to find this wonderful book in audio. The narration had too much variability in volume and the words sometimes mumbled together to make it difficult to understand (even with previously reading the chapters). Also, the abridged content was fine, but I would have included a different selection had I wanted to summarize and shorten the book. There are so many of the stories and not as much of the detail included in the book. But, overall, it does a fair job representing the content of the book, but not great.
I'd return it, but I can't since it was free with my new audible membership.

Holy Spirit Power!

What many Christians never have been educated about - powerful. Larry Crabb speaks from real-life examples.

Abridged Not Clear

I own the physical book and have read it previously, but wanted to re-read, so I bought the audiobook. I was deeply disappointed to discover the audiobook is an abridged version of Crabb's book, as that is not very clear in the main product description. Overall, I would highly recommend the physical book, but not the audiobook.

One of the best books ever

This is my second time reading this book, although I listened to the audio this time. It again challenged me and gave me helpful insight into connecting with people. Still a book I would recommend to all my friends.

Must Read!

I was encouraged to check this book out by a colleague. As a therapist, one of the problems that Dr. Crabb covers so well is the problem of how psychotherapy alone lacks at helping individuals work through their core issue(s). He wrote,
“I wonder if we like to think of our problems As evidence of psychological disorder, because we lack the courage to be broken by our loneliness and need”. I now have a different way at looking at the Counseling process and understand the importance of truly connecting with an individuals heart. Advice and instruction are helpful but should not be at the center, he says. Connection is life! Lastly he said, We prefer to see the Bible as a rule book, a collection of principles to follow when life gets tough rather than a revelation of his heart. We prefer instructions on what to do rather than an invitation to connect our hearts to His”. This is a must read for anyone looking to develop insight into how you can truly work through your difficulties.

Great book! I wish it wasn't abridged!

The book was fantastic! Larry Crabb has some incredible insight.
You can pick up on a few background noises or him stutter on a couple words. But otherwise it's not too noticable.
