Acerca de esta escucha

By meditating on personal examples from the author's life, as well as reflecting on the inspirational life and writings of Thomas Merton, stories from the Gospels, as well as the lives of other holy men and women (among them, Henri Nouwen, Therese of Lisieux, and Pope John XXIII), the listener will understand how becoming who you are, and becoming the person that God created, is a simple path to happiness, peace of mind and even sanctity.

What made the experience of listening to Becoming Who You Are the most enjoyable?

This is an UNabridged version of this excellent, narrated by the Author, Fr. James Martin sj. Fr. Jim is the Curtural Editor of America magazine and I read his work regularly. His writing is nothing short of brilliant. So, I had very high expectations when I purchased this piece. I can honestly say that the audio book exceeded my expectations.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Becoming Who You Are?

The expert interpretation or translation of Thomas Merton's writing and thinking. Fr. Martin provides is very enlightening even to an older person like me. I am a 73 year old retiree.

Have you listened to any of James Martin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No other experience. But, if I discover any, I will acquire them immediately.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I intend to listen (and simultaneously read) a second time and in one sitting.

Any additional comments?

Intend to purchase all of Merton's work available in audiobooks.

Great Reading and Listening.

I loved this book and was sad for it to end! I felt the same way at the end of the “Jesuits Guide to almost Everything.” Heartfelt and deeply spiritual, the thoughts shared about Thomas Merton and Henri Nouwen resonates in my soul. “For me to be a saint means to be myself.” -Thomas Merton

Loved this book

The entire book is worth reading,,, but the last chapter is one of the most moving reads I have ever encountered . It is also one of the most practical applications of the writings of scholars and non-scholars I have ever read in my 72 years.

Seek and you shall find but don't expect the same results or the same crossroads as the author or anyone else for that matter.

If you want to refresh your memory about Thomas Merton, Henri Nouwen and other spiritual seekers, this audible by James Martin will take you back and remind us once again that we are all on the spiritual path and we shouldn't compare our spirituality with another.

Everyone of us has to follow their own truth and James Martin does an excellent account of the truths given to us by Merton, Nouwen and himself as a Jesuit priest. Short bios on all three give it a simplification and quotations from the authors are done in good form, giving the reader a sense of the spiritual formation of each one of them.

The author shows us that the path is full of crossroads, one is left with the knowledge that this is a lifetime quest and for us not to get discouraged. The above authors have faced multiple crises and have overcome many fears and doubts, showing us that we mustn't give up on ourselves but we should continue our quest, which is eternal.

Don't get too self-assured after having gone through a hurdle because another one will follow but as each one is passed through one gains a little more momentum and strength to take on the next challenge.

And last but not least, don't compare your spiritual journey with another, it will lead you to discouragement and despair. Each one of us has their own truth and their ways are not necessarily your way. They might look somewhat identical and that is good because it gives you encouragement but you are seeking your truth not someone else's truth.

A friend posted this on Facebook today: "I took the road less traveled but I don't know where the hell I am." We have to laugh at ourselves or we will get too discouraged

"Becoming Who You Are" was an excellent listen! It was superb inspiration on several mornings at the gym and on my walk to work. Fr. Jim Martin is one of the great translators of 20th century Catholic writers for the 21st century audience.

Excellent Food for Thought

It's a fairly decent story. There is nothing profound. But...... If you listen as if it's a conversation then it's a quite enjoyable chat. Easy to listen to. No topic to heavy. I would listen to it again.

It was ok.

James Martin shares his wisdom gained from his personal experiences and the written experiences of "Saints" of the Church. He points to a way of how we too may become a Saint! Yes, you!
No, not just the other guy but YOU!

Me, a Saint?

I loved listening to this book. It was very clear, concise, inspiring, and enlightening. I didn't want to stop listening to it for a minute. I'm a fan of Merton and Fr. James did a wonderful commentary on him and Nouwen, it was actually refreshing. Highly recommend this!

Inspiring!

Father Martin's meditation on Thomas Merton helped me understand what Merton meant by the false self. It is the self we develop to hide our true self from friends, family and co-workers. It is the social self that attempts to appear hip, slick and cool when none of those things are true. The false self is a road block to finding who you truly are.

Personally Life Changing
