Publisher's Summary

Paramhansa Yogananda was the first yoga master of India whose mission it was to permanently live and teach in the West. In the 1920s, as he criss-crossed the United States on what he called his "spiritual campaigns", his enthusiastic audiences filled the largest halls of America. His initial impact was truly impressive. But his lasting influence is greater still.

This audiobook, the version of which was first published in 1946, helped launch a spiritual revolution in the West. Only rarely does a sage of Paramhansa Yogananda's stature write a firsthand account of his life experiences. Followers of many religious traditions have come to recognize Autobiography of a Yogi as a masterpiece of spiritual literature. Yet, for all its depth, it is full of gentle humor, lively stories, and practical common sense. Now, with this audiobook, the 1946 edition is again available, with all its inherent power, just as the great master of yoga first presented it.

    "Wisdom; Knowledge; Humbling."

It didn't take long to accustom the the dialect of the narrator, then I really found his voice soothing and heart opening to listen to.
As for the book, its starts off slow, but it is worth hanging in. The second half of the book is a treasure of experiences and learning. Overall it is an amazing story. Really gives us "mere mortals" a perspective of where we are on the journey to enlightenment, and the potential that lays within all of us. Inspiring! It would appeal to a person serious about their spiritual development. It expanded my mind well beyond what it was before listening this truly amazing autobiography.

"Kriyananda Reads As If Yogananda Guided Him"

Swami Kriyananda's reading of this spiritual classic by Paramhansa Yogananda exemplifies the continuation of the great master's message of Self-Realization to the world. It was like Yogananda himself was reading this holy scripture. I was touched deeply by Kriyananda's vocal clarity, diction, and the pronunciation of the Sanskrit, Hindi and Benagali words. I was thrilled from start to finish to listen to Kriyananda's reading of this timeless Autobiography of a Yogi!

    "Interesting listen"

I enjoyed the story for the spirit of what it implied. What i would add for curious listeners is that the reading of this version by Swami Kriyananda is so drawn out that i was able to listen at 2x or 3x speed with total clarity. The difference being noted that a few chapters sounded like they were recorded on a different mic and Swami's speed was quicker so a 2x speed was required. But for me, to listen to a 19 hr book in half or less the time, was a nice plus. I will also add that the increased speed gave a better sense of emotion to the story and i could feel Swami actually smiling during an exciting moment in the story. At normal speed all flux in his voice seemed to go away. I listened to this book because i had just finished Steve Job's biography by Walter Isaacson and Autobiography of a Yogi was mentioned numerous times as a personal favorite of Steve. I am an atheist so despite an interesting story and great life, I found it all pseudoscience at best. Enjoy for it's cultural significance and gleaning on Indian culture.

"This is a lot of wisdom in one book"

I see why Steve Jobs liked this book. Steve wanted to be a spiritual Yogi or leader of people. In many ways he was and he got his wish in some ways. I liked the book learning about India Vedic training in the form of Yogi. The wisdom built into this book goes long with Deepak Chopra's work, Mike Dooley and many others. It’s well worth anyone reading the previous author’s work. I will not ruin it for you, but you should read it. I will say that by the halfway point you will understand why Steve Jobs liked it. Plus you will understand the simple wisdom contained within it. The sound is a little off as it goes loud to quiet quite suddenly.

"Oral tradition transferring a union w the Divine"
If you could sum up Autobiography of a Yogi in three words, what would they be?

    Thrilling, sensational, transcendental!

What was one of the most memorable moments of Autobiography of a Yogi?

Stories reminiscing the great gurus: the lives' and tales of Babaji and Lahiri Mahayasa.

Have you listened to any of Swami Kriyananda’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No, but his voice is soothing and quite melodious.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?

The lives of the gurus, when they touch your life, it will change and open to a world of Divine Bliss!

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Get a better narrator. The one used is very dry and emotionless.

Who was your favorite character and why?

    Yogananda---the book is about him.

What didn’t you like about Swami Kriyananda’s performance?

    Dry, slow, emotionless

Did Autobiography of a Yogi inspire you to do anything?

    Look more into spiritual life

    "Not for a rational mind"

I decided to listen to this audio-book after I read in Steve Jobs biography that was his favourite read. Sadly I cannot digest Autobiography of Yogi. Perhaps I should not read in those stories literally and take it with a pinch of salt.

According to Steve Jobs biography he decided to undertake the anti-cancer therapy when it was already too late. What SJ did instead? He believed that eating apples will cure him. And honestly, all I can think of now is that if you believe in this book you can easily believe that eating apples will heal all your maladies.
