Publisher's summary

"The lordship of Christ should include an interest in the arts," writes Francis Schaeffer. "A Christian should use these arts to the glory of God, not just as tracts, mind you, but as things of beauty to the praise of God."

Many Christians, wary of creating graven images, have steered clear of artistic creativity. But the Bible offers a robust affirmation of the arts. The human impulse to create reflects our being created in the image of a creator God. Art and the Bible has been a foundational work for generations of Christians in the arts. In this book's classic essays, Francis Schaeffer first examines the scriptural record of the use of various art forms, and then establishes a Christian perspective on art. With clarity and vigor, Schaeffer explains why "the Christian is the one whose imagination should fly beyond the stars."

Inspiring

I've listened to this book many times. As an artist it's encouraged me to develop an overview and strategy for my work. As a Christian, it's inspired me to live my life creatively.

Still relevant today- maybe even needed.

"How ugly are so many churches these days!" Schaeffer states in this slightly dated but important work.

Has there ever been a time in church history where 'art' has been more neglected and at the same time so despised (and even feared)?

Some of the questions tackled:
Can Christians make art that is religious in nature? Can Christians make art that is NOT religious in nature? Why are there so few pictures of anything in new "outreach" churches? Why are so many churches today made from the material that metal storage sheds are made from? Are stained glass windows unbiblical?
How many churches refuse to hang even a painting in the building!

Schaeffer seeks a Biblical footing for his reasonings. He leaves the reader with an important and balanced perspective about a case for art in churches today. He encourages a mindset for the Christian to take God's commands into account and seperate human traditions that run contrary.

It turns out that the Bible actually has a lot to say on the subject, some of it in exacting language while others can be clearly separated.

Beautiful, as always.

I am always a fan of Schaeffer. There is always so much wisdom, scripture and beauty in his words, and reading them always gladdens my heart, and I hope, strengthens my mind.

Interesting Perspective

As a Christian sometimes people have discouraged me from doing liturgical art but I have a great fascination with it. I also think that art and creativity is a God given gift I enjoyed this book because it made me feel good about what I have been given. It was very enjoyable ....I will read it again because I feel that I can get more with each reading.

A light shining into the darkness

As a Christian, an artist, and a teacher of artists, the nature of art itself often comes into question. I look around at my students and colleagues and wonder how I, of all people, ended up where I am. This book shone light on that subject! Schaeffer’s many biblical examples in defense of art, as well as the principles he infers from the Word’s precepts, are delivered beautifully and succinctly by the narrator. This text has been a great inspiration to me philosophically and practically.

I had read this title years ago. this was a very good read to listen to and Schaefer does a beautiful job as an art historian giving us a clear understanding of art history and its relationship to truth and world views

God as our creator is also an artist.

Enjoyed every listening moment and would recommend this book to Christians and non-Christians. alike. Although I used to won the paperback version years ago I hoped that one day I could buy it online as a book with a narrator doing the reading.
