I Wanted To Like This Book

If you like to hear endless lists of dates followed by recommendations of other books about the person in question, you'll love this book. But I found it so boring. In an effort to find some reason to keep listening to this book I tried skipping over people I had never heard of and who had been dead for 200 years. I figured in a group of 50 people, someone must have an interesting story told in an interesting way. It didn't help. Even when the subject was someone I had heard of, the story telling was uninspired. I couldn't keep my mind from wandering. I have now given up.

Hard to listen to

I found the content excellent. However I found the narrator extremely difficult to listen to. Normally I can get used to a narrator, but never did on this one.

An interesting text.

While the book does in fact have useful information the obvious antiCatholic bias is distracting and unnecessary. The polemic employed makes the author seem more angry than faithful and the clear assumption of inability to gain salvation within the Catholic Church makes him seem Arrogant and somewhat uneducated.

Inspiration- life lived in complete faith

After listening to this book, I feel your heart will be greatly stirred by the lives of those who have lived by faith. Men and women who have walked in love throughout life similar to our own. I strongly encourage you to listen to this book, as I feel your heart may be stirred to study further into the lives of whom were written. Above all I believe you may be stirred to dig deeper into the great God almighty who was the guiding light, during times of darkness.

Misses the mark if you are looking to be inspired

I saw this title as I was searching for my next book, and seeing the rating was still so incomprehensibly high, I decided to review it. If you want to encounter the biographies of the authors favorite sermon writers from the 1600s and on, this book is for you. I read up to Fanny Crosby. I'm going from memory from about a year back, but I think she might have been the first person on the list who wasn't a minister and one of the few who wasn't British. If I could have borne hearing another word from this author, it appears he began to branch out, but at that point [that is, after getting through Wiersbe's opinion on 200 years of who's who in British clergy], I figured 'Why torture myself, when audible lets me return books I don't like?" So I did. Preachers writing sermons or concordances or study guides certainly reflects a dedication, but it's not a practical encouragement of faith for the average person. I want to know about Christians who faced temptations and or trials and with the help of God, prevailed. And I want for that story to be more about God than it is about the person through whom God is telling his stories. Those are the people whose stories I want to hear about.

Interesting historical sketches

Somewhat ecumenical in perspective, but great overview of some well-known and lesser-known preachers and notable Christians of Great Britain and the U.S.

ok but where's the spirit and power?

interesting, but missing spirit-filled Christians, healing and miracles! these guys are devoted, but I wanted to hear about the baptism in the Holy Spirit, tongues, the infilling... after all that's where the power of God is.

Great idea for a book!

In my experience, as a follower of Jesus Christ , it’s good practice to study the lives of notable Christians of times past and learn from them. This book had many Christians that I’ve heard about but also had plenty of ones I’ve never heard of before. Great book and the narrator had a wholesome and comfortable voice too.
