This exciting audio drama is based on an immensely popular podcast that has received hundreds of positive reviews and has had over four million downloads - and counting.
For Army Reserve soldier Michael Cross, the world as he knows it ends in an instant. One minute he’s in college, and the next rioters are roaming the highway around him, breaking into cars and literally tearing people apart. This is the day the dead walk. This is the world of We’re Alive.
The first season features 12 chapters packing performances and sound effects that rival movies and prove that modern audio drama is undead and well. Join our survivors as they band together, struggle to fortify a safe haven known as the Tower, and discover that zombies are far from the worst thing in a post apocalyptic Los Angeles, where the rules of human decency no longer apply.
Little food. Little water. Little hope. Who is lucky enough to say "We're Alive"?

“We’re Alive is a modern rendition of an old-school medium. Maintaining a style that is both retro and contemporary, the radio drama will give horror fans the campy, kitschy style they like, but it also provides a variety of characters and development to keep general audiences engaged…Despite not being able to see the action, the excitement and intensity is still sustained through score and sound design. In some ways, the lack of visuals to accompany the audio creates more suspense. The narrator controls how much the audience knows, slowly teasing out information. Accompanying the drama are sparse moments of comedic relief…Expressing a keen awareness of the zombie subgenre, many of the jokes come from familiar scenarios and tropes of zombie stories.” (Examiner.com)
Avid Zombie fan who's starting to listen to more and more Fantasy and Sci-Fi stories. So, my description is apt to change. Dog lover who's known to have cats. LOL C# coder, part-time prepper, B movie fan, AMC watcher, recovering but successful day trader, perpetual student, overjoyed uncle, former adrenaline junkie with a flare for cooking, and lots more. LOL
quick summary: michael cross spent 3 tours in iraq. now, he's back in california taking classes. just as his quiz starts there's an explosion, and he goes up to see what's going on, against his professor's assertions that everything will be fine. as more and more students gather around the t.v. to see some kind of riots breaking out, michael decides to head to his base. there he runs into angel, his commander, and saul. angel won't let them open the armory until the base commander arrives and gives them the ok. but as the $h!t really starts to hit the fan, they bust in. however, the alarm attracts the infected. once they realize nobody's coming to investigate the alarm, they decide to wait out the alarm's timer and leave in a hummer. as they flee through the city, they rescue riley and pegs from the roof of a florist shop. they decide to try to rescue angel's girlfriend, who lives in a nearby apartment building. once there, they discover it almost totally abandoned, and they recognize it has good defensive qualities by the way the floor plan is laid out. so starts their story of survival.
there's a large cast of characters, but it's not hard to keep track of who's who b/c each character has his/her own dedicated voice actor. the voice acting is exceptional. there are lots of sound effects, and they are also done exceptionally well- they help to immerse you into the story.
this story has it all: the various complications surrounding surviving with a bunch of people you don't know, a great cast of antagonists (prisoners who've escaped), drama, interesting infected, gore, and lots of action.
while not a pure zombie story, i totally enjoyed listening to this series. the spectacular voice acting and the engrossing and evolving plot keeps bringing me back, week after week. what do i mean by that? this series is a free weekly podcast. each podcast is b/ween 15 and 30 minutes. the 1st 2 minutes are ads and a pickup from the last episode. i didn't want to deal with that so i downloaded the 1st 2 seasons on audible. i am now catching up with season 3, which just ended. season 3 is only available via free downloadable podcasts.
if you're into zombie / end of the world stories and are looking for something new, definitely give this a try. i warn you! it's addicting!
The whole story and sound effects with the music makes it so much fun.
Michael I can identify with him.
Got me nervous in parts for what was to come next.
If you like old-school radio with a modern day punch you will love this download.
MOST DEFINITELY. . ..EXCEPT I HAVENT READ THE PRINT VERSION, BUT THE AUDIO PROVIDES THE OPPORTUNITY TO DEVELOP CHARACTER IDENTITY BY VOICE, ACCENTS, (IE RILEY AND DATU)!
I LISTENED TO ALL THREE (AND IMPATIENTLY WAITING FOR SERIES 4) BUT THE MOST MEMORABLE IS DATU'S CAPTURE IN THE STADIUM AND THE DEATH OF SAMANTHA. SHE PLAYS SUCH A SHORT ROLE, BUT IMMEDIATELY SHE CAPTURES THE SPIRIT OF THE WHOLE BOOK!
THIS IS THE FIRST AND THIS ONE INSPIRED ME TO PURCHASE MORE DRAMATIZED!
DON'T KNOW BUT SOMETHING ABOUT SAUL!!!!
SAUL IS STUBBORN, DOESN'T LISTEN, HEAD STRONG, YET HE IS A SUPER SOLDIER! I TOO SERVED OVERSEAS AND LOVE HIS CHARACTER! NOW ON THE BATTLEFIELD WITH A SOLDIER LIKE THAT I WOULD PROBABLY PUNCH HIM IN THE FACE, BUT HE GETS THE JOB DONE AND DOES NOT OVERTHINK IT! SKILLzzz!
I drive a truck so I listen to a lot of books.
This book reminded me of 2 things, old time radio and a made for tv movie that went to dvd. It consist of a full cast, which I like, but it did not have a narrator. There are breaks with music and it prolongs the book.
I am going to take a break from listening to the full cast type, it was entertaining in some areas but in others it was annoying.
Each chapter ends and then there is music signaling a new chapter, plus the say the title of the book each time. Also I did not realize that this was a series made for radio, like community theater, and formed into a book.
Yes, and it sounds like it was a radio series to begin with.
There was to much music and scene ending drama music for a book. I found myself thinking that they seem to be trying to fill in or add on situations that really are dulling the book, then when in the final stage of the story it just ends, so I was not too happy with that.
I like the full cast and different voices for each character, and this book was enjoyable in parts and dull in others, exciting and challenging, but over all it was mediocre.
You can download all the pod casts for free, they're currently on the 4th season.
This is Audio Theater, so the characters are sometimes over the top, and it is very different from a novel. It also took awhile to get used to all the sound effects.
Overall the story is not anything special or unique, but I enjoy the characters, voice actors, and enough of the plot to have spent the last week listening to all the episodes. I actually enjoyed how naive the writers made the characters, it's a nice injection of humor.
If you're on the fence about it, I suggest going to the website and listening to the first episode.
Well.......the story was pretty good.....actually, that was pretty much the only thing that was ok about this book. I've read a LOT of zombie books, and none of them had me rolling my eyes as much as this one. Talk about Drama! Man! The personality of the main characters Michael and Angel are FULL of drama. These guys are constantly snapping at each other and other people as they are trying to get things done. They should be working with their people to understand their strengths and utilized those strengths to maximize their survival. All too often they get too dramatic about one thing or another.......sheesh....Amateur hour throughout the entire book....
I would have to Say that Burt, who was an older retired Marine, and was full of spit fire was my favorite character. He had his head on straight, but Angel, Michael and others were so full of themselves they couldn't listen to him.....nearly cost them everything.
I don't know. The sound effects were ok, but w-a-y too often the voices were too soft or too darned loud. Ya know, there is software that will bring it all to a nice medium...... I found myself rewinding the book several times and having to turn up the volume to hear what somebody said, then turning it back down to hear what the next person was saying..... too inconsistent.
NO, God no, please no more...... I couldn't take Skittles running off with Sal's socks....I just know that character would find his way back into the the second book.....
Great listen for zombie lovers, however, don't waste your credit. You can download (31 chapters as of this review) for free from itunes.
No, because I'm waiting for the 3rd season.
The performance. Easy to suspend disbelief.
Not narrated, dramatized.
Too long for one sitting.
I have listened to We're Alive more than once and I always find something new about the story or characters. Enhanced version is a must for any WA fan.
I enjoy how it is not just a "zombie" story, but a story of how people get along and overcome in the end of the world scenario. Not all gore.
All of the character's are great and get into the roles. You get to know them just from their voices.
I think their own tag line works well: A story of survival.
Negative - I have listened to hundreds of audiobooks and never have I felt so frustrated to be left hanging in the middle of the story. Otherwise I would have rated this story much higher. But with the ending, I am surprised others rated this one so highly.
