To the Best of Our Knowledge: Creative Pairs | [Jim Fleming]

To the Best of Our Knowledge: Creative Pairs

The idea of creative collaboration is a relatively new one. For centuries, science and culture focused on the self self-expression, self-realization. But two is the magic number. In this hour, we'll explore creative partnerships. Joshua Wolf Shenk talks about two of the most influential partners of all time, John Lennon and Paul McCartney. And singer/songwriter Ben Folds on his collaboration with novelist Nick Hornby.

Publisher's Summary

In this hour, Joshua Wolf Shenk has written a detailed analysis of the working relationship between the prolific and influential songwriting duo of John Lennon and Paul McCartney. He tells Jim Fleming they did complete each other, but not in the way you might think.

Next, Lan Samantha Chang was a student at the Iowa Writer's Workshop, and now teaches there. Her new novel follows the lives of students and one particular professor in a creative writing program in the Midwest. It's called All Is Forgotten, Nothing Is Lost. Steve Paulson asked her to start by reading some of it.

Then, Joelle Biele discovered Elizabeth Bishop's poetry while she was a college student. Biele was so impressed with Bishop's poetry that she edited a book called Elizabeth Bishop and The New Yorker: The Complete Correspondence. Joelle Biele told Anne Strainchamps what happened to Bishop's poems when they were submitted to The New Yorker.

Finally, Ben Folds is a singer/songwriter from North Carolina who recently joined forces with Nick Hornby, the critically-acclaimed novelist from England. Folds and Hornby collaborated on an album called Lonely Avenue. As you might guess, Hornby wrote the lyrics and Folds wrote the music. To the Best of Our Knowledge producer Doug Gordon talked to Folds about working with Hornby to create Lonely Avenue. [Broadcast Date: April 13, 2012]
