Publisher's Summary

From the makers of A Suitable Boy, Fatherland, and The Handmaid's Tale and based on the best-selling novel by Indian diplomat Vikas Swarup, the production was recorded on location on the streets of Mumbai with an Indian cast.

When Ram Mohammad Thomas, an orphaned, uneducated street kid from Mumbai, wins a billion rupees on a live TV quiz show, he finds himself beaten up and thrown in jail by the programme's producers. During his interrogation he explains, through a series of flashbacks, how he knew the answers to all the show's questions. What he describes about his life is jaw-dropping: "You learn a lot about the world by living in it." he says.

His account takes us on an extraordinary adventure through every strata of modern-day India, from orphanages to brothels, gangsters to beggar-masters, into the homes of Bollywood's rich and famous, a well meaning, but ineffective British Missionary, and a seedy Australian diplomat.

Using a quiz show format, the drama is punctuated with scenes from the TV studio. Ten questions, 10 answers: and with each answer the stakes get higher.

    "Brilliant!"

I don't do many reviews, just the exeptionally bad or exeptionally good. This is good, very good.

I'ts a really refreshing way to to tell a story and the dramatisation really adds to the atmosphere.

It's much better than the synopsis suggests so if you're in two minds about it, take a chance and listen.

    ""Q & A (filmed as Slumdog Millionaire)""

I 'read' this book because I heard about the movie. The sights and sounds of India are brought alive through well-written descriptions and with the varying accents of different speakers (including American, Australian, English and Indian) . The music is delightful. The background sounds (e.g. arguing, cheering, laughing, T.V., neighbours etc) help transport the reader into the life and adventures of the street-boy protagonist. I enjoyed listening to this audiobook very much; I heard all of it in one sitting. Very much recommended!

    "Better than the film?"

I thoroughly enjoyed listening to this production sometime ago, I even bought it for my Mum who's said the same. Fantastic story which is beautifully dramatised so you can really feel immersed in their world. And having seen the film recently, which is also very good, but it somehow didn't move me the same, didn't leave me with that same lasting memory. So of the two, definitely listen to this first!

    "Q+A"

Briliantly done- I enjoyed the twists in the story, the authentic sound track of India and couldn't wait to see the film Slum Dog Millionaire- however the audiobook is better than the film

    "Excellent"

I am very, very glad I bought this. It was very much a shot in the dark - but a good shot!
The story is set in modern India, and we learn the life story of the main charachter through a series of flash-backs....but the way the flash-backs are done is very novel, and keeps the listener wanting to find out more.
I found the story very uplifting. It does address some of the 'darker' and more unpleasant aspects of life in modern India - but it doesn't get depressing. In fact, quite the contrary - it's very positive....a real 'feel good' listen. Definitely worth it.
