When Irene Spencer meets Vera Small at her daughter Lesley's wedding reception they embark upon a correspondence that is quite unlike any other in the history of letter-writing.
Both Irene and Vera are happily widowed and endowed with errant offspring. They live in a world of church fetes and amateur dramatics, but love nothing more than dipping their pens in the vitriol pot - while remaining the firmest of pen-pals.

Say something about yourself!
This is the entertaining first episode of the Woman's Hour Serial. Scales and Rutledge are terrific as always and the timing is perfect. The recording is fast paced letter reading that is hilarious in spots and hints at quirky action that happens between the lines and between the letters over time.
I've checked to see if the BBC is rerunning these programs and it seems that Audible is the only way to hear future programs. My suggestion is not to use a credit here--as they are too cheap for that. Instead wait until a sale and pay with cash or a free coupon. I enjoyed this as a quick and light bit of silliness. Funny.
I ove Agatha Christie audibles and also stories from 50's and 60's - especially in the UK
excellence love every minute of The ladies of Letters cannot get enough of them kerp them coming
I really enjoyed this short play. Funny and brilliantly performed. Another Radio four classic. Will be downloading more of these over time.
"Ladies of Letters"
A good prduction which will have you chuckling whilst listening
I passed a blissful hour during a recent coach journey listening to these two ladies ingratiate themselves with each other and then get prickly and wonderfully catty, returning full circle to keeping their friendship alive. What a great listen.
Irene being taken in by the man posing as her son - it was so obvious to everyone but her what he was up to!
Both these excellent actresses were perfect in their respective roles as Irene and Vera. They embraced the characters completely.
It made me laugh, but it also made me stop to think about family relationships - both women had daughters who took them for granted and were often less than loving.
Why isn't there an audio version of the second series (More Ladies of Letter)? A big chunk is missing from the story line!
"Brilliant and funny!"
The voices of the narrators, love all these books.
Love all this series. Brilliant! Well worth the listen and not just the once!
"Ladies of Letters"
