Parallel realities and the deep structure of space-time sound like science fiction. But these are matters of real scientific inquiry. Lord Martin Rees is a cosmologist and astrophysicist who spends his life contemplating such things. He insists that we ourselves, human beings, are the most complex cosmic phenomena by far. Though, Martin Rees says, we're probably not the apex of evolution.
