One child in every 110 in the United States is now diagnosed to be somewhere on the spectrum of autism. And as awareness rises, so too, do studies, treatments and speculation about causes and cures. This week On Being, Krista Tippett looks at autism as part of contemporary life. Her guests are Jennifer Elder and Paul Collins, whose son has autism. Life with him has stretched their understanding of the spectrum of ability, creativity, and difference. Jennifer, an artist, has authored books about autism for children and families. Paul, a literary historian, has pursued glimpses of autism across history and society - before it had a name. In art and writing, they've explored autism in historical, medical, and social perspective. [Broadcast Date: July 14, 2011]
