BBC Radio 4 Sitcom by James Cary, set in Bletchley Park in 1941. Originally broadcast May - June 2009.Three code-breakers are forced to share a draughty wooden hut as they try to break German ciphers. Unfortunately, they hate each other.

Includes the following episodes:

  • ‘Royal Visit’ - A royal visitor is coming to inspect Bletchley Park, but the top brass are worried that this particular royal is a Nazi sympathiser. Hut 33 has to delay him and make sure he doesn't see any of the code-breaking machines.
  • ‘Pigs 'n' Spivs’ - Supplies are running short. The office has run out of paper and pencils and the canteen is only serving boiled cauliflower. Archie refuses to resort to the services of a spiv, but Charles has no such scruples.
  • ‘Yellow’ - The staff have to get their yellow fever vaccinations. The only problem is Charles is too much of a snob to be injected by an Australian doctor, Archie is scared of needles and Gordon still needs a note from his mum.
  • ‘Where Boffins Dare’ - Having made a total hash of a message, Hut 33 are threatened with being posted to Burma. When a message indicates that a German spy is going to be parachuted nearby, they see a chance to redeem themselves. But the spy turns out to be an old friend of Charles.
  • ‘Getting Heavy’ - Hut 33's record is the worst in the complex. Charles is mortified with shame, Archie is desperate to prove himself and Gordon wants to impress a girl he has just met. They break into Hut 7b to get extra information on a message they are decoding, which turns out not to be a good idea.
  • ‘Yankee Diddle’ - An American visitor is joining Hut 33. He seems to be very wealthy and very gullible, which presents Charles with an irresistible chance to fleece him. Not only does he have more money than sense, but he also happens to be Roosevelt's nephew.

"I laughed the whole way through"
What made the experience of listening to Hut 33: Series 2 (BBC Radio 4: Comedy) the most enjoyable?

I'd heard that Hut 33 was funny, but I didn't think I'd find it as hilarious as I did. The characters are as unique and distinctive as the ridiculous circumstances they find themselves in. While I don't know everything about England during World War II, this American girl still found it very relatable and good for a lot of laughs. I only wish Audible would provide Series 1 because I would love to hear these characters when they first met and got involved in the war effort.

    "An excellent character lead sit-com"

For me this (and Cabin Pressure) are the best R4 sitcoms of recent years. It bears repeated listening to catch all the things you missed first time. For me it's an equal of the Dad's Army radio episodes: characterisation, plot and acting are all top notch. I'm just hoping the other series get added soon.

"If only they still made these"

I've listened to other series on the radio, and they are all funny, easy listening. The characters are stereotypes, but that's kind of the point. Brilliantly written, fantastically performed and a good recording.

    "Don't mention the war..."

Oh dear, this probably falls into the category of 'you'll either love it or hate it' - it's so silly, positively farcical at moments, deals in all the stereotypes and cliches of Britain in the second war but it's absolutely hilarious and never fails to cheer me up. The characters have become like old friends, especially Archie the Geordie (and Marxist). Probably best to avoid though if you share living space with sensitive Polish ladies or Germans who think we go on about the war too much...

What did you like most about Hut 33: Series 2 (BBC Radio 4: Comedy)?

I LIKED ALL OF THE CHARACTERS, HAVING SAID THAT IT HAS TO BE MINKA. THE PSYCHOTIC WOMAN FRON POLAND. SHE DID THE MOST CRAZY THINGS LIKE TRYING TO SHOOT PLANES DOWN WITH HER RIFLE. HER CHARACTER MADE THIS FOR MYSELF, AND MY SON.

What did you like best about this story?

EVERYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOVED IT ON RADIO 4. I WAS PLEASED TO BE ABLE TO GET THIS BOOK, AND LOOK FORWARD TO MORE OF THEM. WHICH I HOPE THERE WILL BE.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

TOO HARD TO CHOOSE AS IT WAS ALL SO GOOD.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

YES AND I HAVE LISTENED TO IT SEVERAL TIMES NOW, IT GETS BETTER EACH TIME. I PICK BITS I HAVE MISSED BEFORE, A REALLY GREAT COMEDY BOTH ON THE RADIO, AND BOOK FORMAT.

    Any additional comments?

LITEN TO THIS ITS SO VERY WELL WRITTEN ITS ONE I FEEL MANY PEOPLE WILL LIKE.

    "An Excellent Surprise"

I downloaded this, not sure what to expect, and I really liked it.

An interesting setting (code-breakers' camp during WW2), a reduced cast with each charcater clearly identified, and good dialogs. Not as clever as Cabin Pressure, but almost in the same league.
