This was a time of great crisis at the CIA, and some agency veterans have credited Hayden with actually saving the agency. He himself won't go that far, but he freely acknowledges that the CIA helped turn the American security establishment into the most effective killing machine in the history of armed conflict.

An amazing book for any interested in CIA and NSA

I absolutely loved this book, from General Hayden's old army grit to his telling of a story that has long been skewed. If you think you know about NSA and CIA in the last 20 years, you don't. Hear what he has to say and enjoy every chapter, I certainly did!

Best accurate account of NSA/CIA Leadership

Best accurate account of NSA/CIA Leadership in the post 9-11 world. Well done General Hayden.

Excellent

This is a great, extremely informative book on American Intelligence. While for obvious reasons Hayden doesn't divulge sensitive classified material, he paints a clear picture of how American intelligence and politics intermingle and even clash. This book reveals how complex the intelligence situation is and the importance of state secrets. Absolutely worth reading. 10/10.

Too long. I got it 200 pages ago

Too long. Good story but kind of says the same thing over and over again.

Authoritative account

This was an impressive work. I could see some perhaps put off by the depth of the details. One has to have a real interest and fascination with the intelligence community to fully appreciate this book.. But the totality of Hayden's experiences and insights and the fact that he personally narrates this work really adds to its value. I had the benefit of hearing Hayden speak in person, so I knew a little bit of what I was in for when purchasing this audio book. I wasn't disappointed. For me, it was a great read that was enhanced by the author's personal reading.

I was skeptical at first of Gen. Hayden. I felt he was unbiased and have great examples of americas intelligence failures and successes.

Great perspective!

This is an must read for all audiences. It gives amazing perspective into issues that many of is don't fully understand. It's complex but very well written. would strongly recommend.

A little hard to follow at times. A good account of activity I knew very little about. Interesting details on areas you only hear sound bits for.
