Publisher's summary

Jenny Blake, author of Life After College and former career development program manager at Google, reveals how to methodically make your next career move by doubling down on what is already working.

Careers are not linear, predictable ladders any longer; they are fluid trajectories. No matter our age, life stage, bank account balance, or seniority, we are all being asked to navigate career changes much more frequently than in years past. The average employee tenure in America is just four to five years, and even those roles change dramatically within that time. Our economy now demands that we create businesses and careers based on creativity, growth, and impact. In this dynamic world of work, the only move that matters is your next one.

Drawing from her own experiences and those of other successful pivoters, Jenny Blake has created a four-stage process that teaches anyone how to seamlessly and continually:

  • Double down on existing strengths, interests, and experiences
  • Find new opportunities and identify skills to develop without falling prey to analysis paralysis and compare and despair
  • Run small experiments to determine next steps
  • Take smart risks to launch with confidence in a new direction

This book is for anyone searching for an answer to the question "what's next?" Whether you have hit a plateau in your perfect-on-paper job, are considering taking on a new role in your current job, are thinking about starting your own business, or want to move into a new industry altogether, one thing remains clear: Your career success depends on your ability to determine your next best move. If change is the only constant, let's get better at it.

Promising Concept

Great concept but something felt lacking. Perhaps the answer doesn’t lie in one book but an exploration of many, paired with action. This book delivers on the concept but is lacking in depth.

Awesome!!!

I love this book. I found Jenny's personal journey to be very inspiring. My favorite part is her suggestion to make your move - then everything else will follow. Otherwise you will surely stay stuck wondering what else is out there for me to discover and inspire.

Great for everyone - must read for all influencers!

Learn how to effectively pivot and make efficient transitions in your career, business and management style. Life is changing whether you want it to or not and you must stay on top of the next “lily-pad” (as Jenny puts it) and set clear goals. Setting a vision and having a firm grip on your action plan will make all the difference. I enjoyed listening to Jenny speak about her shortcomings and how she overcame adversity and transformed her life and business. This book helped me curate a thoughtful action plan to my career pivot and hope you will find its content just as valuable.

Distracting Narration

First of all I do want to say that I thought there was some helpful information and perspective in the text for anyone looking to make a change. There was a lot of 'me' in it which didn't seem necessary to make a point, which after a while feels like it crosses the line from helpful examples to narcissism.

The narration itself was hard to get into and consistently focus on compared to other audiobooks. It's was distracting, because at times she would be speaking about struggles people were going through, but it sounds happy and like she was smiling about it. Like a news anchor smiling and upbeat reading stories about someone in the community being viciously murdered. It often comes off as contradictory from what she is saying and how she is saying it. Might be less distracting and easier to focus on if revoiced, or just read the physical book itself.

She invested her time into this book.

Jenny had great insight how other people failed and succeeded. She broke down the process to comprehend and apply it to your system. If you don't read the right books and absorb knowledge that is there for everyone. The skills you need to advance will be in the red. She gave me more tools I need to further my search for freedom and love. Thanks Jenny. I appreciate the knowledge you gave to me. I will share my knowledge to family, kids, friends and more. The key of living a fulfilled life is to help others to theirs.
