Publisher's summary

This profoundly moving tale of love, bravery, and tragedy by New York Times best-selling author Isabel Allende brings to life a country ruled with an iron fist - and the men and women who dare to challenge it.

Irene Beltrán is a force to be reckoned with. As a magazine journalist, an unusual profession for a woman with her privileged upbringing, she is constantly challenging the oppressive regime. Her investigative partner is photographer Francisco Leal, the son of impoverished Spanish Marxist émigrés. Together, they are an inseparable team and - despite Irene’s engagement to an army captain - form a passionate connection. When an assignment leads them to uncover an unspeakable crime, they are determined to reveal the truth in a nation overrun by terror and violence. Together, they will risk everything for justice - and, ultimately, to embrace the passion that binds them.

A classic book done well

If you are a fan of Isabel Allende, this audiobook doesn't disappoint. It is read nicely with the Spanish-American accent you would expect, and the drama and seriousness brought forward by the author, along with the endless anecdotes are well conveyed here. On the whole, a colorful and entertaining listen and an impressive rendition of Allende's work overall.

Good story, but difficult to follow at times

Storyline may be difficult to follow as it jumps from one time period to another and from one family history to another.

Another great novel by Allende

Once again an inspiring story of resistance against great injustice. An inspiration for our times

Hard to follow

I found the story hard to follow and too full of what seemed like contrived happenings to make the story gel. Hard to keep track of the movement between families. Just wasn’t for me although I loved Daughter of Fortune.

required by a college class....

this was required for a history class. I did not enjoy it. this is not a type of book I would normally select for leisure reading so if you enjoy lots of drama then you'll like this book but to me it was over the top and exaggerated behaviors constantly.
