Publisher's summary

An eye-opening, myth-shattering examination of what makes us fat, from acclaimed science writer Gary Taubes.

In his New York Times best seller, Good Calories, Bad Calories, Taubes argued that our diet's overemphasis on certain kinds of carbohydrates - not fats and not simply excess calories - has led directly to the obesity epidemic we face today. The result of thorough research, keen insight, and unassailable common sense, Good Calories, Bad Calories immediately stirred controversy and acclaim among academics, journalists, and writers alike. Michael Pollan heralded it as "a vitally important book, destined to change the way we think about food."

Building upon this critical work in Good Calories, Bad Calories and presenting fresh evidence for his claim, Taubes now revisits the urgent question of what's making us fat - and how we can change - in this exciting new book. Persuasive, straightforward, and practical, Why We Get Fat makes Taubes' crucial argument newly accessible to a wider audience.

Taubes reveals the bad nutritional science of the last century, none more damaging or misguided than the "calories in, calories out" model of why we get fat, and the good science that has been ignored, especially regarding insulin's regulation of our fat tissue. He also answers the most persistent questions: Why are some people thin and others fat? What roles do exercise and genetics play in our weight? What foods should we eat, and what foods should we avoid?

Packed with essential information and concluding with an easy-to-follow diet, Why We Get Fat is an invaluable key in our understanding of an international epidemic and a guide to what each of us can do about it.

Uncommon knowledge

Very insightful, not sure why science is fighting reality. I like the way the history is presented and used to support a better interpretation of study results.

Brilliant

This book is amazing and would change people's lives if they can get over the notion that we need carbohydrates

Everyone should read this book.

If you could sum up Why We Get Fat in three words, what would they be?

A compelling, scientific theory about why the greater population of America is over weight.

What did you like best about this story?

The fact that all the authors theories are backed up with historical facts.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me open my eyes and look at what we've been told for so long and question it.

Any additional comments?

I would like to start out by saying that in general I've always eaten in moderation, I know, like many Americans, that certain foods are bad for me but often find it hard to resist. In an effort to improve my health and lose some belly fat, I stopped eating some of my favorite foods:breads, pasta and rice. I quickly lost 8 lbs. so I believe this less carb theory. But reading this book has opened my eyes to not only the reason why so many people gain so much weight but how major government departments may be willing to keep us in the dark about the real reasons we get fatter over time. And the author does a thorough job of explaining the biological way our bodies process different types of foods. It's like getting a combination history and biology lesson at the same time. I hated Biology when I was in school but this explanation was really well conveyed. The biggest surprise is the truth about what causes heart attacks. One of the biggest take-aways is stay away from white flour, sugary drinks and high carb foods. And start adding more leafy greens and meats to your diet.

The Red Bible for weight loss - thank you Gary Taubes!

This book changed my life. I listened to it in its entirety multiple times over the past few years. For those who want to skip the historical section of the nutritional debate, skip to chapter 11 (corresponds to chapter 9 in the book) and compete till the end. Listen to the science carefully, and your eyes may just be opened.

Although a bit technical for me, the message came across clearly. Great book and insight
